A fun email for Friday. I hope you enjoy!

    Edition: Friday, March 31st, 2023

🎤 Listen to this email here:

    Swipe:

Because it’s “handwritten” you'd think someone wrote this and left it at your door…and it definitely got my attention enough to read through it!

The ad above is from a flooring company, but it looks like the window installation industry has caught onto this too, checkout this "handwritten quote" from a window installer:

    Wisdom:

Speaking of hand writing....I currently hand write my daily to-do list, but it lacks one major component:

    to-do-list.gif

It's not digital so I can't share it between devices!

My wishlist of features would be:
    • Access/edit from phone and desktop.
    • Easily integrates with everything.
    • Not many options, dead simple.

SO I polled Twitter for the best *simple* daily to-do list app, here's results:

    Todoist: 21 votes
    Things3: 7 votes
    MS Todo: 5 votes
    Apple Notes: 4 votes
    Google Keep: 4 votes
    Written: 4 votes
    Apple Reminders: 3 votes
    Notion: 3 votes
    Teuxdeux: 3 votes
    TickTick: 3 votes
    Asana: 2 votes
    Evernote: 2 votes
    Sunsama: 2 votes
    Trello: 2 votes
    Tweek.so: 2 votes
    Alexa: 1 vote
    Any.Do: 1 vote
    Carrot: 1 vote
    Done: 1 vote

I will commence playing around with a few of these! Let me know if you have suggestions as well 🙂

    Interesting:

In Apple Stores all screens are tilted at exactly 76° degrees. This is so you move the screen with your hand…interacting with the product more and making you feel more attached to it.

    apple-70-degree-macs.webp

They use protractors to measure the screens:

    apple-protractor.webp

The laptop screens are measured at 76° as well:

    apple-macbooks-70-degree.webp

Isn't that level of obsession so hilariously "Apple-like"? 😂

I remember Earl Nightingale telling a story from the 1970's about a top television salesman (I'm paraphrasing this):

"I was speaking to the top television salesman at a department store, and he said the secret to knowing who would buy is to see if they were playing around with the knobs.

If they are touching the TV, flipping and turning things, they are far more invested in the TV and far more likely to buy."

Guess the 76° Rule isn't so crazy!

    Picture:

A fun & cheap joy in life is getting a carwash!

    Here's me enjoying my $7 thrill 😂

It's like you go into a different world for a few minutes.

Pro-Tip: If you have automatic seat presets, make setting #3 a "CHILLAX" setting where one button push leans the seat back, lowers the seat, and moves the steering wheel up 😎

    Essay:

An extremely common Instagram Ad I’ve been seeing is this white paint makeover for older brick houses.

They just paint over the brick, and paint the window trims black so it gives the house an updated "Stucco" look. TBH it looks pretty damn good!

I think Before & After photos are one of the best way to get attention for a service on social media. It instantly shows the transformation people want without a lot of text. Here's another great example of Before & After ad:

**Side Note** I posted that brick-to-white house makeover on social media, and HOLY COW DO SOME PEOPLE HATE IT!!

I personally think it looks neat, but man the amount of hate comments it got was kind of hilarious. Never thought THIS would spark such a heated debate 😬

I’m so shocked Everdo wasn’t on your list of to-do apps. I’ve tried a few and this one is sooooo functional.
There is even a focus function where you could create your “only two things” list for the month by starring just two of the items.
omg I love it like crazy.
Though I actually do your handwritten 2-things list on my wall, just to have a visual on the critical projects.

You may be blown away by trying reMarkable2. You can write anything you want and it has a paper-like feel. Portable. Light. Amazing. The handwriting can be converted to text. Synchs across devices. I don’t use the bells and whistles but you will love this. If you’d like a referral link for a discount let me know!

Hope you're having a great weekend. I have been a subscriber of your emails for probably 18 months now and really enjoy your S.W.I.P.E.S emails, they're always full of great content.

I wanted to reach out as two parts of your email really grabbed my attention; the first was the to-do lists, and the second was the power of before and after pictures.

I have just finished reading Getting Things Done by David Allen. I don't know if you've read this book, but I would highly recommend it. The methodology that David explains has really helped me organise my time management, especially my to-do lists.

For my to-do list I use Google Tasks, which is probably somewhere near the bottom of the top 100 'to-do list' applications, but hear me out.

I wanted all of my lists, tasks, calendars, and reference docs, to all work together and be easily accessible, which is why I use Google workspaces. It's free, it's in the Cloud, and it all works together. I use Google Keep to take down my thoughts and notes and organise them into lists, then I use Google Tasks as my to-do list, and add my tasks to my Google Calendar. With Gmail, I can quickly add any emails to my Tasks list to look at later or move it to my notes. You can even set up daily emails to tell you in the morning what events, tasks, adn any reminders that you've set for the day. I'm also an Apple user and it works fine.

Some of the other apps you mention have great features and pretty colours/graphs, but I find the synchronization between the Google Apps really helps simplify the process of getting things done on your to-do list.

The second part of your email with the before and after images resonated with me too, as I have an aluminium painting business as a side business and the before and after bring in the leads on FB and IG like crazy!

I also have a fun widget on our website that lets you slide over the before/after images to see the results:

I was turned onto Google Shopping Lists which isn't really a full organizer, but so simple it just works....hope I can stay in the Google ecosystem!

I Love old fashioned carwashes, with all the huge fettuccini looking mops and those scary sucker things at the end that look like a squid. It is like another dimension for a minute, and also strangely relaxing...almost ASMR inducing...like one of those Indian head massages on youtube!

Truly HATE the brick-to-white trend! This monochrome design trend is "in" right now, but will look terrible in 5-10 years. It'll be out of style and the paint will fade yellow. Brick is timeless; you can never get it back once you paint it!

    Love the S.W.I.P.E.S. Fridays BTW!
