Goal: Get a budget estimate.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

Is there a budget for the project?

I’ll put together a proposal and send your way shortly, but I’d like to make sure I’m in the ballpark.

Thanks,
[NAME]

Goal: Check for eligibility.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I’m the proposal writer at [COMPANY NAME]. We saw your RFP and plan on submitting a proposal next week.

Before we do so, though, I’d just like to double-check our eligibility, especially with regard to:

Our status. We’re a non-profit, not a corporation.
Our budget. We’re limited to projects from $250,000 - $1,000,000.
Our team. We don’t have any medical doctors on the team but we all have advanced science degrees.

Just want to make sure we’re in the clear before jumping in!

Thanks!

[NAME]

Goal: Introduce yourself to the person handling proposals.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

Are you the person who reviews proposals at [ORGANIZATION]?

I’m the proposal writer at [COMPANY NAME] and I’d love to get to know your team a little better. We’re planning on applying for several programs + projects in the near future, and I always like to meet the people I’m writing to!

Hope we can connect!

[NAME]

Goal: Introduce yourself and ask for strategy help.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I came across your name on the [ORGANIZATION] website and wanted to reach out.

I’m the new grant writer at [COMPANY NAME]. Over the last couple of years, [COMPANY NAME] submitted several unsuccessful proposals and my team doesn’t really know why they were rejected.

If you’re free for a brief call next week, I’d really appreciate a quick conversation about what you’re looking for and how we might be able to improve our submissions.

Thanks!

[NAME]

Goal: Introduce yourself and continue a relationship.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME].

I’ve just replaced Bob Jones as the proposal writer at [COMPANY NAME].

Before he left, Bob gave me your name and email, and he told me how much you’ve helped us improve our proposals to [ORGANIZATION] over the last few years.

We don’t have any urgent submissions coming up, but I’d like to take advantage of this quiet period and invite you out for a coffee this week or next.

I’ve got a few quick questions about your review process...and, frankly, I’d just like to meet you and get to know each other a little. You and Bob got so much done - I want to make sure to continue it!

Please let me know!

All the best,

[NAME]

Goal: Renew a project.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

Last year our team here at [COMPANY NAME] submitted a successful proposal for [PROJECT].

The project is still underway and going great. You can see all of our live stats here on our project page: [LINK].

I’m writing to ask if [ORGANIZATION] would like to renew the project funding. As you can see from our regular reports, we’re hitting all the goals outlined before we started (and we think there’s more to be done)!

We still have another 3 months before the year is up, but I’d like to hash out some next steps with your team well ahead of time.

Are you free for a call soon? Here’s a link to my scheduler: [LINK]

Thanks!

[NAME]

Goal: Invite someone else to join your proposal (and ask them to write their section).

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I was on the phone with a great potential client today and I thought of you right away.

He’s rebranding his ecommerce store to reach a broader audience. Here’s the current site: [LINK].

I thought we’d be a great team - I’d handle the research and copywriting; you’d do the development/design side of things.

The budget is around $20,000 and the timeline is roughly 3 months.

I’ve also attached my notes from the call and some more info on his business and the existing sales/marketing stats.

I think we could make a big impact!

If you’re interested, please reply and let me know. I plan on submitting a proposal one week from now - before then, could you also send me a breakdown of your costs so that I can include everything in one submission?

Really hope this works out!

Best,

[NAME]

Goal: Send a proposal for a project that doesn’t exist yet.

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I know [ORGANIZATION] typically only works on large scale projects with other international companies and organizations.

This is a little bit unorthodox, but would you be interested in a local version of your [big project]?

I run a 3-person agency specializing in these scaled-down projects, and we’re based right here in Cleveland. We’ve recently worked with:

Facebook
Google
The UN

I’ve attached a project outline (and a proposal). It’s more of a starting point than a final doc, but it’ll give us some reference points.

If you’re interested, I think it’d be a win-win-win for you, us, and the city!

Please let me know - you can reach me at xxx-xxx-xxxx or by replying to this email!

Thanks,

[NAME]

Goal: Check on your proposal’s status

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I submitted a proposal for [PROJECT] two weeks ago but never received a response.

Could you:

Confirm that it was received.
Update me on the status.

Also, if I can add any supplementary resources, please let me know.

Thanks!

[NAME]

Goal: Check on a proposal and ask for early feedback

Hi [CONTACT FIRST NAME],

I just submitted a proposal for [PROJECT], and I figured this was a great time to reach out and connect with you.

If you’ve got time for a quick 15-20 minute call, I’d like to learn a little more about your side of the process, especially:

2-3 points that take a good proposal and make it a great one;
Any red flags you look for that might immediately disqualify a proposal;
Any specific extras I can send to improve my proposal. I’ve got case studies, presentations, and other research/resources I can forward to you if you’d like.

I’m sure your department has just been hit with a wave of submissions, so I understand if you’re busy - I just want to put together the best package possible.

If you have the time, here’s a link to my scheduler: [LINK]

Many thanks!

The Copywriting Command Center

A Must-Have For All Newbie Copywriters

copy-command-center-spreadsheet-download.png

Spreadsheet Link: [Copywriting Command Center]
Make a copy: File –> Make A Copy

If you’re looking to start a career in copywriting, you need a CCC.
Copywriting Command Center.

I hear so many wannabe copywriters crying about not being able to get a copywriting gig, and it’s no wonder…..they do zero prep-work!

Finding a small copywriting job is the same as finding a regular job: It requires some upfront effort and organization.

You need a Copywriting Command Center when looking for gigs:

copywriting-command-center-by-kopywritingkourse-768x345-no-watermark.png

There’s no better way to start of the hunt for a copywriting gig than by mapping out a plan to get those gigs.

If you walk into this with no plan, no place to list out contact info, gigs etc….you are unlikely to succeed.

But what if you just made a small Google Spreadsheet with some rudimentary information on how/where to get started?

Here’s the minimum sections your Copywriting Command Center needs:

  • Other copywriters. Contact info.
  • Places hiring. Contact info.
  • Places you’d like to write for. Contact info.
  • Your skills. Your portfolio.
  • Places jobs are posted w/ links.
  • Groups to join w/ links.

Simply creating a “Command Center” can greatly increase your odds of success in copywriting!

P.P.S. Feel free to make a copy of the file. Just do File –> Make A Copy inside the spreadsheet.

Make Your First $100 As A Freelancer

(with instructions and scripts to follow)

make-100-dollars-banner-768x382-no-watermark.png

Let’s say for some reason a monkey wrench has been thrown into your work life, and all of a sudden freelancing over the internet seems like an interesting idea.

Well you’re in luck my young friend, because your Uncle Neville has taken the liberty of going through every single step of the process, and giving you the templates along the way. I’ve been freelancing my whole adult life, and have helped thousands of others do it (and not just in copywriting). This post has no conceptual bullshit here, just action. Let’s start:

If you’ve ever wanted to start a business but never had any money, let’s try this together right now and make your first $100:

Step 1.) Identify the specific service to sell:

Using our handy Business Idea Generator I got the idea to sell WordPress websites for a flat $100 fee.

Here is our value proposition in one sentence:

For $100 I will setup your WordPress website in 24 hours.

So that’s the product we’re going to sell.  We’ve identified a price, a service, and a delivery time.

Our Price: $100.
Our Service: Make you a working WordPress website.
Our Delivery Time: In 24 hours.

Step 2.) Post this offer on your Facebook:

This part is super easy, yet super hard psychologically (for some people).

All I want you to do is post this script on your personal Facebook page:

Hey Friends,

For $100 I will setup a full WordPress website for you within 24 hours.

Any website you need (can be a personal blog, photography portfolio, company website), I will make for you. If you’ve ever wanted a running website but didn’t know where to start, I’ll guide you through the whole process. We’ll hop on a call together and within 24 hours I’ll get your entire website up and running.

These websites are designed so:
–You can easily update them.
–They have a chance of getting ranked in search engines.
–You can send people your website link.

I am doing a very limited promotion of a flat $100 fee for this ENTIRE service. Many web developers charge starting at $125/hour, so this is extremely generous!

Sincerely,
WhateverYourNameIs – Phone/Text: 555-555-5555

P.S. If you know anyone that might want my help setting up an entire website, please tag them.

That’s all you have to do. Don’t overthink this…..just post it.

Step 3.) Post the offer on Facebook Groups:

This part requires being part of groups on Facebook where your service might be useful.  Since we’re selling WordPress themed websites, we can try:

Since it’s generally frowned upon to blatantly spam a Facebook Group with offers, we’ll modify the above offer just a bit for the Facebook Group postings. Copy/Paste this script into the groups:

Hey friends! If you’re ever wanted a website built, I’m doing a special deal where I’ll setup a full WordPress website for you within 24 hours for only $100.

Any website you need (can be a personal blog, photography portfolio, company website), I will make for you. We’ll hop on a call together and within 24 hours I’ll get your entire website up and running. I’ll even train you how to use it if needed.

These websites are designed so:
–You can easily update them.
–They have a chance of getting ranked in search engines.
–You can send people your website link.

I am doing a very limited promotion of a flat $100 fee for this ENTIRE service. Many web developers here charge starting at $125/hour, so this is extremely generous!

Sincerely,
WhateverYourNameIs – Phone/Text: 555-555-5555

P.S. I’m pretty decent at setting up websites, so if you have any website questions at all, ask them in the comments and I’ll help you out or point you in the right direction.

Step 4.) Post on Craigslist:

Next step is to utilize our old friend Craigslist. It’s still a massive hotbed of people posting and searching for specific gigs.

And to make sure you have zero excuse not to do this, I will make your entire ad for you:

Here is the ad you need to copy/paste into the Services –> Computer section of Craigslist:

craigslist-image.jpg

Title: WordPress websites made for $100 right here in Austin!

Body: WordPress websites made for you right here in Austin!
– Flat $100 fee for full website setup.
– 24 hour turnaround time.
– Will go through full setup with you, or do it for you.
– Will show you how to use the website.
– Expert in setting up WordPress websites.

Call/Text Neville to start: 713-301-1546

*NOTE* Obviously you’ll need to replace your city, name, and contact information.

If your Craigslist posting allows you to post an image, we’ve got you covered on that too. Here’s a sample (and proven) template for you to copy/paste. I’ve included the editable template below:

wordpress-set-up.jpg

To customize this template as your own, you can open this template in Google Drawings then click File –> Make A Copy:

wordpress-download-template-drawing.png

Step 5.) Make a One Pager to post on bulletin boards:

What is a One Pager you ask?  It’s basically a flyer you can physically post somewhere (preferably in an area where people will want websites).

Here’s a printed out and taped-up version:

wordpress-flyer-posted.jpg

You can download and customize this One Pager flyer with your own information. Click the template then click File –> Make A Copy to edit your own:

one-pager-craigslist-template-download.png

Here is where you will post these flyers:

  • The 3 nearest coffee shops to you.
  • Any co-working spaces in your area.
  • College campuses nearby.
  • Outside of office buildings.

Everyone’s area will have a difference in options to post. The point is to get your generous offer in front of people who may want a website. The above options are a great start.

Since outside activity has been limited lately, it’s also wise to snap a pic of your flyer and post it to social media.

Pro-Tips For Newbie Freelancers:

Keep it hella simple:
Often the smartest people never start because they overthink things. Just remember to follow the path of least resistance here.  We’re doing simple projects, for a simple price…..so keep it simple.

Don’t flatter yourself you egotistical asshole:
“Omg what if people judge me for posting that??”
“What if I don’t get more than 10 likes??”
“What if this experiment fails and everyone knows??”

Umm please don’t flatter yourself so hard.  If you think people are paying attention to you THAT much, you need to tell your egotistical brain to calm the hell down.

No one is paying that much attention. When’s the last time you really judged and ruminated over someone’s status update post?

You don’t need to plan out every aspect of this:
All we’re doing is fishing to see if people bite. If we get taken up on our offer 10 times in the first hour, then hooray! You’ve hit upon something great and got yourself 10 new clients!

Many people (especially super-analytical and planning-type people) tend to get paralyzed because they feel they need to plan out every-tiny-little-aspect of how they’ll handle these jobs.  Resist the urge my friend!!

If you start planning out “future scenarios” all the time, you’ll never get started.  Just get the gigs first, then handle the details later.  This will be your on-the-job training.

Don’t try to increase your prices just yet:
I see failing and poor freelancers all the time. They think they “deserve” a certain pay grade right away without putting in the work.  Fuck these people.  If you think the world owes you something, you’re going to have a very very very tough time in the future.

You know who wins in this game?  The people who are willing to start out with this mindset: “OK, I’m just some newbie freelancer with zero experience, so I’m willing to start at the bottom. Yes some people will take advantage of my low prices, yes some people will get the deal of lifetime with this cheap work, but I’m willing to start somewhere and get experience. I will raise my prices when I am flooded with clients.”

These people are awesome.
These people get so many jobs they HAVE to raise their prices.
These people serendipitously get gigs and jobs they never dreamed of.

24 Hour Real Life Experiment using these scripts:

*NOTE* This experiment was done SO last minute, on a Friday night (the worst time to post social content), during the holidays, and advertising a very specific service (WordPress website building)….and it still worked!

Before posting these templates I quickly asked someone to follow the steps. Joe Dowdell a WordPress developer from the U.K. took me up on the offer and within 15 minutes posted all the scripts and templates shown here.

Joe posted a comment on a looonng thread in The Smart Passive Income FB group. It was a 100+ comment thread, and it got a little love, but not much interest:

100-dollar-experiment1.jpg

Joe then posted in a group called the Idea Machine FB Group. 1 person wanted to build a site in January with Joe, 1 wanted extra services like design, and one was semi-interested. All from a stupid little comment Joe copy/pasted from this blog post!

100-dollar-experiment2.jpg

Joe then posted the exact script and image on Craigslist (actually he posted it to the equivalent of Craigslist in the U.K. called GumTree.

Joe posted the ad in the section:
Business Services >> Telecoms & Computers Services >> Website Design Services.

This was posted in his city of Frome, England, with a population of less than 27,000 people, and Joe actually got a response from the ad in less than 24 hours!

100-dollar-experiment3.jpg

At my request Joe did this experiment with allll of these things going against him:

  • Only 24 hours to complete.
  • Could only post in his small town.
  • Posted on a Friday night during the holiday season.
  • Was advertising only a very specific service.
  • Limited to posting in Facebook groups and on GumTree, no other platforms.

….and less than 24 hours later he already had several interested people.

Thanks for playing along Joe!

Here’s another example of this method working damn-near immediately for someone who never charged for their photography services (and immediately booked a $120 gig)!

Linda’s First $120 Photography Gig Example:

linda-n.jpg

A few weeks after this was posted, my friend Linda emailed me saying she got her first photography clients from this! The cool part was, Linda creatively “disguised” the sales pitch as a friendly request for going to a cafe.

She sent this message to 28 of her friends and old classmates through email:

Hello friends and old classmates,

I just started a photography business and am still growing it. I will be in Houston working an Artful Bachelorette party next weekend and thought I’d offer discounted photo sessions mornings of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd to my old schoolmates!

If you’re around and interested. I’ll charge a flat and discounted rate of 120 dollars, shoot for an hour and share digital prints via Google Drive. Typically I share about 20-50 prints for an hour’s worth of shooting. It’ll be lovely to see your faces and meet your families!

If you’re not in the market for photos at this time, I’d still love your support in the form of a like on Facebook or Instagram. Many thanks in advance.

Lastly, I also want to check out Honey Art Cafe Saturday afternoon if anyone wants to join me! If so, just FB message me or text me at (number removed).

Sending you all love and light,
Linda

So what happened after Linda sent that simple email through Gmail to some friends? She booked not one…..but TWO paid photography sessions for $120 each!

linda-email1.jpg

linda-email2.jpg

So within 24 hours of sending the email she got TWO paying clients for a total of $240!

Here’s why this is great:

  • Linda was previously a bit scared to charge for services…turns out several of her friends wanted her services.
  • Linda didn’t have a big email list of people, it was literally just 28 friends/family she sent to.
  • Linda didn’t pitch hard, in fact the end of the email was a request to hang out when she was in town, not a sales pitch.

Pretty neat huh?

Hopefully Linda’s example shows you this simple method of offering your services to the world really can work!

Your Goal Is Just To Make $100:

When you begin freelancing the main idea is to see what work suits you. Not everyone will want to develop WordPress themes, but there’s a huge amount of freelancing opportunities out there. Follow this format and drum up some money quickly.

Over the years, the methodology of first posting your freelancing gigs on your social media has the fastest result of any method I’ve ever seen. I’ve provided you the exact scripts and templates for every step of the way.

Sincerely,
Neville Medhora – Copywriter trying to make you $100 quick.

Making Messenger Bots:

There's always new technologies coming around that go through "hype phases", which is great because if you learn that technology a lot of people will want your services during that phase. Right now "Facebook Messenger Bots" are making some buzz, so here's a template offering that service:

Converting Blog Posts into Multiple Forms of Social Media:

This is a super cool idea that's been getting very popular lately. It also doesn't require a tremendous amount of technical skill, but just a little (photo editing, a bit of writing etc).

Hey all my friends with websites,

Your website is most likely missing out on a ton of traffic from social platforms. Most people just share a link to their blog posts from social, but that's not a great way to do it.

You've got to customize each post to the specific social platform.
--Twitter: You've got to make under 140 character descriptions, and 506 x 253 pixel images for sharing.
--Facebook: You've got to write descriptions that are about 1 paragraph long, and images that are 470 x 470 pixels.
--Pinterest: You've got to make images that are optimally 735 pixels wide and adjusted for height.
--Instagram: You've got to make images that are 1080px by 1080px so they show up well. ....this list of rules goes on...

That's a lot of work!!

But fortunately I'm performing a Blog Content -to- Social Platform service for only $100 (this is a one-time offer).

For just $100 I will:
--Take 10 blog posts or website links and format them for sharing on:
--Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and LinkedIN.
--This will include all the photo editing and making images.
--This will include all the custom written descriptions.

Every digital agency has an entire team of people that do EXACTLY THIS JOB. That's pretty expensive, but I'll do the same thing for you for only $100 for your top 10 blog posts.

You'll then forever be able to re-share these articles on those platforms, properly written and properly formatted for images. When you make a post specifically designed for each platform, engagement and exposure goes way up.

If you want to be one of the few lucky people getting this service for only $100, PM me or write "LET'S GET STARTED" in the comments. I'll be taking this down soon, so let me know right away.

Thank you!
Admin Lesley

Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is a decently hot thing right now, and a lot of people solely sell through Amazon. If you are experienced with Amazon FBA, you can do a "product review" of someone's product listing for them. Even if you help them bump up the conversion just a little, it can make a real difference in sales.

Posting Your Gig In Alternative Places (Broadening Your Audience)

Going for friends and family is great, but we’ll eventually have to get our word out to the world.

For this reason it’s great to be part of a bunch of GROUPS.

Now at this moment and time in history, by the numbers, the most active community group usage is on Facebook. So once again we’re going to utilize the world-wide-network of people on Facebook to (sneakily) promote our services, and gather new ideas.

If you’re not part of any groups, here are some of the one’s I’ve joined:

Some of these (like “Austin Startups”) are specific to my city. But try search for your own city, such as:

[City] Startups.
[City] Jobs.
[City] Marketers.
[City] Business Owners.

P.S. Try making a posting in a group, and post it below. I can help you refine your post!

Posting Your Gig

Here’s another version posting Photography:

Hey friends! As you know I do photography on the side, and would like to offer friends a 1-hour photoshoot for just $100.

In this photoshoot we can take professional head shots, family portraits, or even puppy pics.
–You get all the pictures to keep.
–A normal photoshoot can cost upwards of $500, so this is a great deal.
–I’ll take care of all the photography and editing. You just show up wearing nice clothes!

So if you’re ready to get some great photos taken, message me or hit me up at 555-555-5555
Sincerely,
Your Best Photographer Friend

This is a VERY simple and low-risk thing to post on Facebook. Most people are actually shocked how quickly this script works.

Often within 1-hour to 24-hours people get gigs (if not MULTIPLE gigs)!

In the comments below copy/paste what you posted on your Facebook.
Let me know if you have questions on what to post, I will help you re-write your post below!

Finding Your Idea + Starting Small

Don’t think of some grandiose idea. Don’t think you “deserve” tons of money. Don’t think you need to “follow your passion and change the world.” We’re here to make some dang money! What can we get $100 from?

A lot of people tend to focus small when they think about freelancing, but in reality there’s A LOT of different options you have:

  • Setting up a WordPress website for someone.
  • Do carpet repair for someone.
  • Hang all the pictures and frames in someone’s house.
  • Crocheting a scarf someone.
  • Build a SquareSpace website for someone.
  • Be someone’s personal assistant for a day.
  • Cooking someone a week’s worth of meals.
  • Writing sales copy for someone.
  • Photoshopping images for someone.
  • Using your art skills to draw a portrait.
  • Building a shed for someone.
  • Doing handyman work for someone.
  • Painting someone’s house.
  • Power washing someone’s driveway.
  • Hauling furniture in a truck for someone.
  • Cleaning up a messy Excel file for someone.
  • Doing a photoshoot for someone.
  • Setup the bookkeeping software for someone’s business.

There are A LOT of different ways to earn $100.

Now I don’t want you to think about “Being Scalable” or “Can this grow into a huge business.”

The best validation for any service is getting paid actual money for it.
