Online course membership area backends (plus free logins for some of them)

You know what I've never seen?  Pictures or walk-throughs of the backends of online courses.
I see a lot of promotional material describing them.....but rarely are pictures and videos of the actual product included.
It's kind of funny, because for nearly every single product you buy......you know what it looks like.  Even software products give you extensive tours of the software and even let you use it before buying.

"For my next trick, I shall sell you this mystery product!"

    Selling Digital Product Without Knowing

I have some theories on why a lot of digital products don't openly show you the material first, but that'll turn into a 2-hour rant.  Instead, let's just take a second to go through a bunch of backends of real income-generating courses!
Well guess what....I HAVE ACCESS TO A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF COURSES. In fact I've sold 13 of my own, and helped produce another 11. I also wrote the copy for hundreds of online courses, and got to see inside the contents.
One of the cleanest course I had written in HTML from scratch. It was a course on how to hire employees off Craigslist with minimal hassle.
    Here's some of the stats:

    • Priced at $69/each.

    • Was a mildly-good seller (the amount of people looking for how to hire employees is FAR lower than the amount of people looking to start their first small business).

    • Sold 377 copies.

    • 6 refunds.

    • $25,599 in revenue.

    • About $500 in labor and material costs to create.

    • Extremely helpful method of hiring many companies use till this day.

    • Ironically the guy I hired to help me with some filming and HTML writing was hired with this method!

    You can see it here:

Let's take a look at some other online course backends from across the web:

WELL! We powered through 12+ backends of online courses....hopefully that gives you a much better idea of what some other people's courses look like.
I always get asked about which software to use for membership sites. They each have their own quirks, so here's just a big list of them off the top of my head + one's mentioned in this post:

    • Wishlist Member (I currently use this)

    • Memberium

    • Member Mouse

    • UseFedora (platform)

    • Udemy (platform)

    • Teachable (platform)

    • Skillshare (platform)

    • Rainmaker

    • ClickFunnels

    • aMember

I would suggest making a list of exactly what you need first, and then finding out which is most suitable to you. Sometimes you don't need as many crazy features as you think!
I sincerely hope this post helped you understand what goes into the backend of a course a little better. Let me know if you have any suggestions in the comments.

I had fun showing you my backend.  And other people's backends. Giggity.

P.S. In the comments, please let me know what your favorite learning style is. Or you can even give me the name/link/style of some material that REALLY helped you learn a lot in a short amount of time.  Books?  Videos?  PDF?  Software?  Lemme know!

Yup, it seems like the combo of video ALONG WITH transcripts or a PDF version of the lesson seems to be a great way to hold a course.

This is a great list. NevBox-worthy in fact because I am going to follow it myself :)

Hmmm.....it seems you might wanna do a sample course or beta test and see if companies are interested first BEFORE building this thing.

I foresee you spending a lot of money/time on something the company may not even want.

Make sure to do A LOT OF HOMEWORK before launching this course. Ask your friends in the positions you are trying to sell to if your course would be what they would buy. VALIDATE FIRST!

Great list Teri....I am screenshotting this and saving for reference :)

I am striving to make sure my videos are all complimented with PDF's, transcripts, and even audios.

Funny and engaging?? I always TRY to go for that as default :)

Awww thanks for the shot of me + Boron! ::flattered::

I think you and a lot of other people still highly prefer PDF's over videos for CONCEPTS. I agree that courses about programming and hands-on stuff do well through video as you can obviously just WATCH what the instructor is doing. Good reply :)

Seems a lot more people than I expected like text. Fortunately most of my normal content is in text, but most of my paid stuff is all video. Will start working to integrate more text into it!

100% agree with that! I always try to give real life examples often as I can (as I did with this whole post). Making sample backends would just be more of the same. Wanted to make sure REAL LIFE BACKENDS were the only thing being displayed.

I think this ties well into the "community" aspect of a course. The author/teacher may have his own opinions and methods, but the community might come up with others. This is why sometimes I love keeping the comments open (on certain posts where I actually WANT feedback)....you get great stuff you never thought of! Thanks Diane!

    Thank you for the reply!

I have decided to set this up because going to the company for a 1-2 day training is sometimes a pain in the butt as they try to gather their team for 1-2 days. One company has already ok'd a video course as it is easier and more in their budget. So, that is why I have started on this path. Once it is set up, then we have a few more that want the training and we may push to do the online course rather than in house live.

The training videos is the easy part...setting up the site is a bit more confusing. My other 1/2 is going through different platforms and my hope is that he can narrow the best down and then it will be a matter of choosing options. (Fingers crossed).

Best learning style, for me, is being an apprentice and learning by the side of a master.

    — They lead by example.

    — Their knowledge saves you days, months or even years of work.

    — They keep you motivated (in my case with the help of a bamboo stick - shinai).

    — They may teach for a salary but they mentor because of a shared passion.

    — They inspire you; making you want to become better.

    — They constantly challenge themselves (and are always open to learning from others).

    Visual - Audible - Tactile - Cerebral + Practical & Emotional

    — If you touch on all aspects, from a teaching perspective, you will address most learning styles. Short, blocks of instruction followed by practical application (real world) will help ingrain the information. My former instructor would always say "Action! Sweat!"

Thanks for putting together your blog and sharing your knowledge!

Thanks for being a Master and Mentor!!

You are helping a lot of people!!!

This is great stuff. My wife and I are working on a course for young women in the 20's taking the CPA and all of these notes and feedback are great to read. I now have a few extra survey questions and ideas from this! Great stuff as always.

    Welcome for the reply :)

You might wanna even find someone on Upwork.com to setup the initial membership site for you really quick, then give you some training on how to use it (usually really easy when already setup).

Try Wishlist Member (onetime fee, works with Wordpress), or Memberium.

Jim this is great, very NevBox-worthy feedback! I completely agree with you. We have ALL these different mediums to teach, why not use all of them combined (if necessary).

    Thank you!

If I were making a new course I would also check out wpmudev.com (These guys rock) and use their coursepress plugin.

I subscribe to their pro members area and it rocks for support and help. We own a few multi-site installs where we have a lot of people on their own blogs.

If I were not using WPMUDEV then I would utilize thrive themes.

Great post Nev, and I just wanted to share this with everyone here.
