Do Tattoos Affect How People View You In The Workplace? Let’s Find Out!

    Neville tatoos flexing

I've always wondered if tattoos have an affect on how people view you....particularly in the workplace.

Many companies have a "No Tattoo Showing Policy" in place, especially for very professional roles.

    So we did an experiment:

Keep in mind the tattoos we are testing must be EXTREMELY VISIBLE, so we're not talking about 1 or 2 hidden tattoos. The tattoo's we're testing are going to be very very visible.

    Sam with No tattoos:sam-no-tattoos

Sam with arm and neck tattoos:

    sam-with-tattoos

    Sam's Eye Tracking Charts:

    sam-parr-tattoo-visual-analysis-.png

    Sam's Total Ratings:sam-photo-ratings.png

    Sam's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems Sam got (+50) Cool Points for rocking the tattoos!

Dating: There was a significant drop (-66) for dating. Judging on the feedback, the prominent neck tattoo is what people disliked.

Business: It seems Sam lost a few points (-14) with tattoos in the workplace.

    Noah without tattoos:

    Noah's Total ratings:

    noah-photo-ratings.png

    Noah's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems Noah got (+23) Cool Points for rocking the tattoos!

Dating: There was a strong drop (-48) for dating. I'm guessing it's the neck tattoos causing this.

Business: Noah lost a bunch of points (-65) with tattoos in the workplace. His "Business" picture without the tattoos was sky high, but it seems perception of the tattoos in a business setting was negative on this one.

    Jack without tattoos:

    Jack with full tattoo sleeve:

    Jack's Eye Tracking Charts:

    jack-tattoo-visual-analysis.png

    Jack's Total Ratings:

    jack-photo-ratings.png

    Jack's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems Jack got (-2) points off his score for rocking the tattoos. I would say this is not enough to warrant as significant.

Dating: There was a super small drop (-4) for dating. I think Jack didn't drop in ranking too much because there's no neck tattoo.

Business: Jack dropped a decent amount (-33) with his tattoo sleeve in what's supposed to be a professional photo.

    Sara without tattoos:

    Sara's Full Ratings:

    sara-photo-ratings.png

    Sara's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems Sara got dinged (-6) points for rocking tattoos in a social context. That's not much, and I would say not significant enough to count.

Dating: However on dating there was definitely an overall drop (-34).

Business: It seems there was a (0) point drop with tattoos in the workplace for Sara's "Business" photo.

    Sara without tattoos:

Sara with full body arm, legs, neck tattoos:

    Sara's Eye Tracking Charts:

    sara-2-tattoo-visual-analysis.png

    Sara's Total Ratings:

    sara-2-photo-ratings.png

    Sara's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems Sara got a slight ding (-4) Cool Points for rocking the tattoos!

Dating: There was a super significant drop (-147) for dating on this set. Judging on the feedback, the vast amount of tattoos prompted this.

Business: Sara lost points (-25) with tattoos in the workplace. I'm actually surprised this number wasn't a bit higher because of the large amount of tattoos showing.

There were two notes on Sara's "Business" photo regarding the tattoos:

"Would prefer without sunglasses. For business, may want just your head. This would be an excellent social/dating photo, though, as you seem very happy and relaxed."

"That many tattoos are an issue for me personally."

    Linda's Eye Tracking Charts:

    linda-1-tattoo-visual-analysis.png

    Linda's Total ratings:

    linda-photo-ratings-2.png

    Linda's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: Linda got robbed of social points with tattoos (-26).

Dating: However Linda got bonus points (+20) for dating. Seems like some people preferred the tattoos in this case!

Business: Looks like she also got MORE POINTS for having tattoos (+25) in this picture. Seems the tattoos were mellow enough, and the picture good enough to where people didn't deduct points for these tattoos.

    linda-2-tattoo-visual-analysis.png

    Linda's Total Ratings:

    linda-photo-ratings-.png

    Linda's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems "Yakuza Linda" got (-24) points off social for the large amount of tattoos.

Dating: The full body tattoos didn't seem to bode well for dating with a (-44) point drop.

Business: Points were lost on this photo (-28) with tattoos (not that this photo was terribly well suited for a "Business" photo in the first place)!

    Neville's Eye Tracking Charts:

    nev-tattoo-visual-analysis.png

    Neville Total Ratings:

    nev-photo-ratings.png

    Neville's Tattoo Conclusion:

Social: It seems I (Neville) got (-44) points taken off for this social photo.

Dating: Seems tattoos added (+16) points for dating.

Business: There were (+15) points for having tattoos in this "Business" photo which is a bit surprising. Guess if I'm gonna be more valuable at work I just need to get a full set of tattoos 🤣

So....do tattoos affect people's perception in the workplace?

We lined up all the Business ratings "Without Tattoos" and "With Tattoos" here:

Of course this small experiment can't account for individual public perception of tattoos, but we hope you enjoyed it!

That's a fascinating correlation, Randal. I'm really curious now if there's a connection. My entire right arm is basically covered in tattoos. But I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, chew tobacco... For me it's about the art. You've inspired me to go do some research on this!

Did you have a way to account for a difference in reaction because the tattoos were photoshopped as opposed to makeup? I mean not everyone will notice they're photoshopped, but they look just Uncanny Valley enough to me that I wonder if may some of the folks in the experiment may have felt that they looked just off enough that it influenced their responses - not necessarily because they're actually prejudiced against tattoos, but rather because these tattoos were sending off a "something's not quite right here" vibe in the back of their minds.

I also wonder about the types of tattoos photoshopped on the models. The pattern seemed to be bunches of tattoos that didn't necessarily all have the same theme and a were maybe a little more on the cheesy side? I think the types of tattoos and the placement (like other's noted elsewhere in the comments that neck tattoos send off a different message than an arm sleeve) might influence the reactions in the experiment.

Thanks Reed, glad ya liked this! Opinion polls can vary greatly, so we chose to do this with more collective data from a broad range of people :)

Yeah I agree, but we wanted to go all out for these tattoos and make them VERY visible.

We did versions with full body shots, and some with only a "few" tattoos....but honestly you couldn't see the damn things on a tiny thumbnail during voting!

Also some of them looked more like birthmarks unless you zoom in a bunch, like this:

    neville-few-tattoos-277x300.png

....you could barely see the tattoos, and therefore we need to "Up" the "Intensity" of tattoo coverage :)

Yeah it seems a lot of people have tattoos.....I was more wondering about people who have LOTS of tattoos.

From the experiment it definitely makes at least a slight difference in perception!

I agree, that's why we made sure to test the exact same photos WITHOUT tattoos first, so we get a snapshot of what adding tattoos does to the result!

Oh wow, so it definitely had some negative connotations when people saw it.

I never thought about golf courses banning them.

    Possibly shirt-worthy comment Jeffrey!

    I agree!

Someone like The Rock has tattoos that look very cultural and appropriate, while a Calvin & Hobbes piece of crap tattoo probably doesn't have the same effect :-P

Hey Pqm, the whole point was to Photoshop in over-the-top tattoos.

Also we tested the pictures BEFORE adding tattoos also on every single person to make sure the change in points was due to tattoos.

The photos being rated are usually relatively small, and the process is quick, so it's unlikely a large majority of people were thinking that.

The experiment required we Photoshop on LARGE quantities of tattoos so they are extremely visible, otherwise without close-up photos and LOTS of tattoos, the results looked more like birthmarks than tattoos, such as this:

BWAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for doing this experiment for me IRL :-P

I think the neck tattoos seem to be what triggers a weird response in most of these photos, it seems without prominent neck tattoos the results are only slightly influenced.

This is a cool story to hear, and possibly shirt-worthy comment Cameron!

    Thanks for sharing Eddy!

Yeah it seems the main thing triggering a negative response to tattoos is the NECK AND FACE tattoos. Simple and normal tattoos don't seem to really set off too many negative alarms in the tests.

Hmmmm, what an interesting takeaway Kendra, possibly shirt-worthy comment!

I never thought about that side of it: Making people instantly more comfortable than you.

My brother at one point had a long beard and really long and partially dreadlocked hair, and I could see how people treated him FAR more casually right away. However like your experience, I'm sure it also drew some negative opinions in a professional environment.

    Glad ya liked this read!

Hey Cierra! As noted in another comment 62% of the subjects in this experiment were minorities (but you addressed that already so we'll move on) :-)

That's interesting about the Asian girl saying it dispels a lot of stereotypes right away, I totally believe it, and never thought about that aspect of it. Thanks for sharing!

I'm a typical white guy with a big at tattoo of some Chinese characters. I've gotten a few "hurr hurr I bet it really says 'loser' or 'butthead' in Chinese" comments. I like to respond in fluent Mandarin explaining that I designed the tattoo myself after living in China for a year.

P.S. I'd love to hear Noah's reaction when he saw his Dating score!

To be fair, the 2 groups you listed already get discriminated against without ink so I think we all know the answer to your question. But as Neville says - he covered a lot of minorities in his experiment

Most of my upper body is covered in tattoos and I definitely get a different vibe from most people when they can see my ink.

My ink is for me and I always had that in mind when I started to get tattoos 10 years ago so I always planned to yakuza my tats so I can cover them up whenever I want coz I know my tats aren't welcomed everywhere. At the same time, I don't let people's opinions about tattoos bother me because my thinking is "I don't judge people who don't have tattoos so those people who don't have tattoos shouldn't judge me."
