This is a fun email for Friday April 29th, 2021. Hope you like it :)

Here's an awesome chart that shows investments in billion dollar companies by "The PayPal Mafia" (the group of people who sold PayPal to eBay in 2002).
In one circular image it conveys a tremendous amount of data.
I love text + images for describing things!
Thought:
Here's a random thought experiment:
Assume the average lifespan is 80, and you can only peek at world every 10 years. It would look like:
1980: Born
1990: Newspaper & books.
2000: Computers get good.
2010: Mobile computers get good.
2020: Social + Crypto get good.
2030: VR worlds get good.
2040: Combination of real world & virtual.
2050: ?
2060: Dead.
Kinda crazy how fast things progress when looking in 10 year increments. The pandemic wouldn't even show up on the radar.
My dad went to Berkley for engineering in the 1970’s, and said back then it was nearly impossible to imagine something like an iPad being real.
Trying to predict decades ahead gets fuzzy!
I have ~40 years left based on current lifespan estimates, so by the end of my lifespan it’ll be wild to see the changes. Possibly:
- Social networks might be things you live in rather than thumb through.
- Phones in current form factor will seem ancient.
- Oculus face rigs will seem hilarious.
- Fine tuned control over genetics could be common.
Uplifting:
Last month one of my goals was to publish a micro-product on the AppSumo Marketplace:
...well here it is!
https://appsumo.com/marketplace-life-changing-mental-models/
It's a product about "Mental Models" I use to figure out problems when I'm stuck.
For example here's a Mental Model I like using called, "Win Win Win."
I frequently return to these methods to solve problems, and it's been a great boost to productivity.
Picture:
My buddy Sam lives down the street and we walked by a commercial shoot at some house in the neighborhood.
It's CRAZY how much equipment and people are involved in these shoots!
There were entire blocks of cars/people/equipment for just seconds of footage.
Kinda wild to think about some commercial you barely pay attention to had this much thought and effort and expense put into it.
Funny little breadbox van.
So many people and junk for just seconds of footage!
Street was full of trucks, equipment, tents, food etc.
Interesting:
I've moved to another office, and it's been fun shuffling around furniture to accomplish these goals:
- One-button sit-down-and-start-working with nice cameras.
- One-button start recording of a two-person podcast.
- Lighting is handled soon as walk in.
Wider shot of current setup.
Still have an intrusive tripod for podcast camera, figuring out how to mount it on wall and hide wires.
Shockingly with the concrete floor and no rug the echo isn't a huge issue somehow.
Agghh the wires. So hard to hide them while constantly shuffling things around.
Drawing:
