These are some classic Silly Putty mail order ads.
The way they "sell the product" is by illustrating and writing out fun uses for it! Some of the uses are:
✔ Bounces!
✔ Stretches!
✔ Makes things!
✔ Floats -- when shaped into boats!
✔ Pickup comic characters!
Nothing has really changed since then. You would still advertise this much the same way nowadays except with pictures and videos :)
Thought:
Podcasts are SO much easier to make than YouTube videos.
With podcasts you just entertain their ears 👂
With videos you must also entertain their eyes 👀
I'm going to try putting out more interesting thoughts and conversations via podcast. While I much prefer ALSO having a professional grade video of the conversation, the amount of effort required is very high compared to a podcast.
Uplifting:
Jimmy Liautaud (founder of Jimmy John's) originally tried starting a burger stand, but grill + fryer + equipment cost $45k, way over his budget.
Then he visited a shop that only sold cold sandwiches, and noticed the owner was using a free Coca-Cola fridge to store everything.
He used the free promotional fridge to store his meats, condiments, drinks, and toppings:
The only other equipment was a meat slicer and random kitchen utensils. Totally doable for Jimmy.
That's where Jimmy got the idea to start Jimmy John's and only sell cold sandwiches!
Picture:
I've been dog sitting an 85lbs pitbull named Sid for the last week. Here's random pics from his adventures!
Interesting:
Here's an interesting mental model:
Try flipping any problem you have backwards ↩️
If you ask: “How can I make more money?”
Try flipping the problem around ↩️
Instead ask: "How can I make other people more money?"
This is a helpful way to approach a problem and potentially find an interesting solution.
Drawing:
When you write, it's your job to take a bunch of words, and reduce it down to the minimum.
This helps people absorb the information in the fastest way:
It's kind of like a big math equation. You might see a whole mess of stuff that looks like this:
But if you boil all this information down to it's core, it becomes a simple equation like:
For example, this gigantic wall of text:
Can be boiled down to...
Hope you enjoyed these little tidbits, have a happy Friday :)
