    Rise of the "UX Writer"

For the summer I rented a place in San Francisco.

It's across the street from Uber HQ, Square HQ, and Twitter HQ. Literally I can see tech nerds lunching on the Twitter rooftop from where I wake up in the morning:

With the help of my spy surveillance equipment, I was actually able to zoom in and hear some real arguments between a UX Designer and a Copywriter:

    ux-designer-argument-on-twitter-building

The point is in this epicenter of tech, I've started to hear murmurs of a new position that combines those jobs:

    👉🏼 UX Writer 👈🏼7>

The "UX Writer" is a position that's catching on lately. You can see it in this trend chart:

    ux writer trends

I've started to see postings hiring UX Writers from tons of big companies like AmazonUberGoogleZenDeskWixDropBox and PayPal (~$70,000/yr).

So this new-ish position is starting to become a real thing. The rise of the UX Writer makes a lot of sense:

UX Designers and Copywriters often work hand-in-hand, and sometimes it doesn't make sense to hire TWO PEOPLE for a job that could theoretically be done by a single person.

Here's an example of how the process used to work:

The UX Designer would create a blank mockup of a page:

    ux-designer-layout.png

Then the copywriter goes and writes all the content:

    ux-writer-layout-lorem-ipsum.png

Now just imagine for a moment you are a copywriter that also knows some basic UX design.....you could theoretically do this whole process yourself!

    Copywriter

    +

    Content Strategist

    +

    User Experience Designer

    = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

    UX Writer!

I was curious what kind of salaries we could dig up for this position, but the "UX Writer" is such a new position, that I can't find any final evidence. We know copywriter salaries pretty well, but as far as I can tell, UX Writer salaries are comparable to UX Designer Salaries:

It's kind of neat to see as the market gets more efficient some of these jobs start to get combined together.

It's further evidence that if you are a copywriter, it's SUPER IMPORTANT you learn new technical skills that make you a Triple Threat!

    Sincerely,

Neville Medhora - Keeping an eye on those Twitter nerds 😐

    That's a great mindset to have :)

One example: I learned Photoshop in high school so I can black-out (what I thought were "cool cars" at the time) and make desktop wallpapers:

I'd say that single skill has parlayed into millions of dollars of revenue and countless laughs and satisfaction. Who knows what adding one more skill to your toolbox can bright :)

Hey Michael, honestly if you're looking to just dip your toe into it, why don't you grab some cheap courses on Udemy or Skillshare to learn the basics of UX Design?

You don't necessarily need a whole degree in it to call yourself a UX Designers (as there's no official certification you need).

I would go the cheap route, see if you like it, then if you're serious go for an intensive program.

    Nice sleuthing Joe!

I bet someone who has a decent amount of UX Design technical skills could learn copywriting (or vica versa) and get the job :)

    Hey Mike,

UX design is very easy and you don't need to know a single line of code to be a professional.

To anyone that wants to learn UX design.

Search "Mike Locke UX design" on YouTube.

I will recommend you watch a handful of his videos, then you can decide to enroll into his Premium course he launched in April 2018.

I get to know about UX design through him and it's been a great journey.

This post happens to feature my favorite line written on the Internet:

"The best part about becoming a Double or Triple Threat is that you often have relatively little competition amongst your peers!

Many people are b!#@% a%$ whiny losers who don’t realize how good they have it"

I'm wondering. lf someone designed his own website and then wrote every copy in it... Does that qualify him being a UX writer?

Cos then, I think I am one 😀😀

    P. S. Thanks for the insightful email Neville

Not sure if Neville approves of my blatant recruitment on his blog post, but I just got approval to bring a UX Writer onto my team.

If there is anyone here that lives in the Bay Area and looking, please let me know.

I mean theoretically if you're doing your own writing, designing, and content strategy...that would technically classify you as a "UX Writer" !

    Copywriter

    Content Strategist

    User Experience Designer

We essentially have these in UK government. They’re called content designers though, and base all their decisions around user need.

    Brilliant post, Neville.

I was just talking about UX writing to someone I know and this appeared on my LinkedIn feed.

This person asked me if UX designers are UX writers too, I explained a bit here and a bit there. But then, again this post seems accurate! [already shared the URL with him]

And thanks for the salary insights! *wink*
