Make Your First $100 As A Freelancer (with instructions and scripts to follow)

Let's say for some reason a monkey wrench has been thrown into your work life, and all of a sudden freelancing over the internet seems like an interesting idea.

Well you're in luck my young friend, because your Uncle Neville has taken the liberty of going through every single step of the process, and giving you the templates along the way.

I've been freelancing my whole adult life, and have helped thousands of others do it (and not just in copywriting). This post has no conceptual bullshit here, just action. Let's start:

If you've ever wanted to start a business but never had any money, let's try this together right now and make your first $100:

 

 

 

Step 1.) Identify the specific service to sell:

Using our handy Business Idea Generator I got the idea to sell Wordpress websites for a flat $100 fee.

Here is our value proposition in one sentence:

 

So that's the product we're going to sell.  We've identified a price, a service, and a delivery time.

Our Price: $100.

Our Service: Make you a working Wordpress website.

Our Delivery Time: In 24 hours.

 

 

 

Step 2.) Post this offer on your Facebook:

This part is super easy, yet super hard psychologically (for some people).

All I want you to do is post this script on your personal Facebook page:

That's all you have to do. Don't overthink this.....just post it.

 

 

Step 3.) Post the offer on Facebook Groups:

This part requires being part of groups on Facebook where your service might be useful.  Since we're selling Wordpress themed websites, we can try:

Since it's generally frowned upon to blatantly spam a Facebook Group with offers, we'll modify the above offer just a bit for the Facebook Group postings. Copy/Paste this script into the groups:

 

 

 

 

Step 4.) Post on Craigslist:

Next step is to utilize our old friend Craigslist. It's still a massive hotbed of people posting and searching for specific gigs.

And to make sure you have zero excuse not to do this, I will make your entire ad for you:

Here is the ad you need to copy/paste into the Services --> Computer section of Craigslist:

*NOTE* Obviously you'll need to replace your city, name, and contact information.

If your Craigslist posting allows you to post an image, we've got you covered on that too. Here's a sample (and proven) template for you to copy/paste. I've included the editable template below:

Step 5.) Make a One Pager to post on bulletin boards:

What is a One Pager you ask?  It's basically a flyer you can physically post somewhere (preferably in an area where people will want websites).

Here's a printed out and taped-up version:

You can download and customize this One Pager flyer with your own information. Click the template then click File --> Make A Copy to edit your own:

Here is where you will post these flyers:

  • The 3 nearest coffee shops to you.
  • Any co-working spaces in your area.
  • College campuses nearby.
  • Outside of office buildings.

Everyone's area will have a difference in options to post. The point is to get your generous offer in front of people who may want a website. The above options are a great start.

Since outside activity has been limited lately, it's also wise to snap a pic of your flyer and post it to social media.

 

 

 

Pro-Tips For Newbie Freelancers:

Keep it hella simple:

Often the smartest people never start because they overthink things. Just remember to follow the path of least resistance here.  We're doing simple projects, for a simple price.....so keep it simple.

 

Don't flatter yourself you egotistical asshole:

"Omg what if people judge me for posting that??"

"What if I don't get more than 10 likes??"

"What if this experiment fails and everyone knows??"

Umm please don't flatter yourself so hard.  If you think people are paying attention to you THAT much, you need to tell your egotistical brain to calm the hell down.

No one is paying that much attention. When's the last time you really judged and ruminated over someone's status update post?

 

You don't need to plan out every aspect of this:

All we're doing is fishing to see if people bite. If we get taken up on our offer 10 times in the first hour, then hooray! You've hit upon something great and got yourself 10 new clients!

Many people (especially super-analytical and planning-type people) tend to get paralyzed because they feel they need to plan out every-tiny-little-aspect of how they'll handle these jobs.  Resist the urge my friend!!

If you start planning out "future scenarios" all the time, you'll never get started.  Just get the gigs first, then handle the details later.  This will be your on-the-job training.

 

Don't try to increase your prices just yet:

I see failing and poor freelancers all the time. They think they "deserve" a certain pay grade right away without putting in the work.  Fuck these people.  If you think the world owes you something, you're going to have a very very very tough time in the future.

You know who wins in this game?  The people who are willing to start out with this mindset: "OK, I'm just some newbie freelancer with zero experience, so I'm willing to start at the bottom. Yes some people will take advantage of my low prices, yes some people will get the deal of lifetime with this cheap work, but I'm willing to start somewhere and get experience. I will raise my prices when I am flooded with clients."

These people are awesome.

These people get so many jobs they HAVE to raise their prices.

These people serendipitously get gigs and jobs they never dreamed of.

 

 

 

Here's another example of this method working damn-near immediately for someone who never charged for their photography services (and immediately booked a $120 gig)!

 

 

 

Your Goal Is Just To Make $100:

When you begin freelancing the main idea is to see what work suits you. Not everyone will want to develop Wordpress themes, but there's a huge amount of freelancing opportunities out there. Follow this format and drum up some money quickly.

How might I suggest that people looking to fix their expensive AdWords campaigns might not go with a total newbie?

Maybe you can offer something that provides less risk for people such as design, writing, editing etc.

Most people will not hand over lucrative ad data and spending to someone with zero experience.

Hey Silvia, you could definitely apply this to holistic nutrition coaching. I tend to think that kind of coaching is more wishy-washy in the way they advertise which makes it hard to get clients.

I would maybe try a post along these lines:

"It's almost 2017 and most people are scrambling to lose weight and feel better. I've been a holistic nutrition coach for 2 years now and have helped over 100 people make their plans. I am doing a special promotion where for only $100 I will get on a 1-on-1 video call with you and create your entire plan for 2017!

We will discuss your goals, what you've been doing wrong, and ways to slightly tweak your habits right over the call. This can result is weight loss, more clarity, more energy, and of course feeling better about yourself!

Let's talk this week, just message me and tell me you're interested and we'll setup a call time. This is just a one-time thing, so no need for expensive month-to-month contracts. Often times clients have a big breakthrough over these calls in the first 20 minutes, so this could make or break your entire 2017.

Do yourself a favor and message me saying you'd like to take me up on one of these consultations. I'm only doing 3 of these. First Come, First Serve."

Nice hustle Chris, although I'm unclear about what you're offering. Maybe you can specify if you're doing the paintings yourself, or helping people paint their own picture?

Maybe try multiple variations over the months to see what works:

--For $50 I will help you draw painting of your choice.

--For $50 I will draw a professional portrait of you in person.

--For $50 I will draw a professional portrait of your dog.

If the offer doesn't have "Product Market Fit", it'll be hard to sell. Make sure people are clamoring to get what you offer then start posting more!

I'm a UX Architect and UI Designer and most people don't know what that is, but it's important for the usability of a site to increase profits, etc.. I want to be able to offer a UX Audit (that goes through their site making suggestions to hopefully hire me at my $150/hr rate - which is still too cheap), how can I use this $100 method to make them interested with the audit?

Hey Chanelle, you can use the simple format followed above, but just replace "Wordpress Design" with "UX Design".

If people are not familiar with why UI design will help their site, then you have an uphill battle. That will require more selling and education, and will not be as simple a sale as "building a website."

Maybe you can instead offer something like:

"Today only, for $150, I am offering a "Where Your Site Is Leaking Money Review." I'm an experienced UX Designer who has worked with over 120 clients to improve the buying process on websites. Sometimes things like changing the location of button can add $20,000 or more per month. Sometimes changing the layout of a buy page can add 50% more conversions.

I am offering a full review to 3 clients right now to identify the leaky spots on your website. For $150 I might be able to save the average $200,000/year website up to $50,000 in lost sales. Contact me now to get started."

Something like that might be more appealing to business owners rather than trying to shove UX Designer lingo down their throat if they don't want it.

Reporting back. No bites over the weekend or today. Posted to three Craiglist cities. Now, I will add some Attention details about myself to give me credibility and also widen my scope, and hit up the local coffee shops when I get back to my city of residence.

Something like:

To attract customers in the stock trading services niche, you could offer allied services.

For example:

installing and configuring trading software

installing and configuring accounting software

systemising their paperwork

Anything complicated or requiring knowledge, you can systemize or templatise. With your knowledge you can do it fast. The customer sees it as daunting because they are doing it for the first time.

lol, thanks for this super confrontational post that I needed. Brilliant idea, I could team up with my tech savvy 13-year old to do this. And um, I'd say stumbling upon this website bro, one of the better things to happen this year. Truly. Thanks for your superb content.

PS. since I worked at ad agencies doing social media strategy & management I am contemplating offering creating ready to use content for small business owners like let’s say “for $150 per month i will create 1 facebook post, 10 tweets and 2 instagram posts a week.” How does that sound?

I'm trying this out with building out LinkedIn company pages. So many of my prospects don't have one or they have the gray city-scape default icon with zero description. I know they'd benefit from the greater legitimacy a company page would give them.

Hi Rohi, it's unlikely people will pay for you to guest blog for them on large sites. You can pickup small copywriting gigs where you write blog posts, but generally they will not allow you to keep your full name on them, they want the posts to look like their own.

Hey Eric, 2 major problems:

1.) The way you are selling it doesn't show what tangible things you will be offering.

2.) The people coming to Craigslist aren't necessarily looking for your service. Maybe you should hang out and post this in FB groups about becoming a more charismatic person. Those people are LOOKING for what you are selling!

Watch companies like The Art of Charm and how they approach the "pickup world" without being pick up artists. They do a great job of selling $10,000+ charisma coaching through their blog, podcast, and session.

Have you ever considered giving a free workshop or clinic to see which parts of this service are most useful?

Hey Darling, I think your offer sounds great. If you can post that in groups where people are looking for.

Maybe you can up the value of your offer by saying something like:

"I'm Darling and have worked at ad agencies doing social media strategy and management, and have picked up all the tactics, techniques, and strategies accounts with over 100,000 followers use.

I am going to be taking on 3 clients to start, at an incredibly low rate of $150 per month. For each clients I will keep their social media accounts fresh, including 1 Facebook post, 10 tweets, and 2 Instagram posts per week.

The accounts I've managed in the past were doing several hundred likes and comments per post, and was profitable with sales. With a little time working with me, maybe we can even get YOU to that level.

Message me saying "I want you to manage my social media accounts!" and we will be begin right away."

 

....I bet something along those lines could get you your very first clients.
