Side Projects (what are YOU working on right now)?

    Working on a side project

What is a side project you're currently working on?

A side project doesn't necessarily have to be a side business.  A side project can be....

    • ...for fun.
    • .....for profit.
    • .......for learning something new.
    • .........for scratching your own curiosity.

Example 1.) My buddy Noah bought a Chrome Extension called Leoh.io and started improving on it. It currently makes no money, but it's just a small side project for fun:

    Leoh.io Side Project

Example 2.) My buddy JR is doing a side project called "Nom Dudes" where he creates videos about food and posts them to Facebook.  It's not his main thing, but he loves making videos, so he's trying it out on the side and seeing what happens:

    Nom Dudes Facebook Page

Example 3.) One of my current side projects is busking in San Francisco.  I'm hanging out in San Francisco for all of August, and the place I rented is next door to the San Francisco City Hall building, and San Francisco Opera building.....a seemingly appropriate place to practice music:

I bought this craptastic battery operated guitar amp and am going out by myself to busk:

    blackstar-busking-amp-2-speaker.jpg

So my side project for the month is coming up with a solid 6-song set list I can play/sing on the side of the road with a guitar.

I've done this many times with other people, but going by myself scares me a bit for some reason. In fact just last weekend me and my brother setup on the side of the road and jammed for fun!

Like I said, a side project can be a useful tool teach you something new, get out of a funk, or get the creative juices flowing!

    Sincerely,

    Neville Medhora

P.S. What is a side project you're currently working on? Post it below in the comments!

You can either post a link to a website you're working on, or describe your project.

P.P.S. Bonus points if you lemme know what you hope to get out of it (EX: "I'm doing it out of curiosity" -or- "Hoping to supplement my income with this" -or- "Starting this with hopes to eventually quit my job.").

P.P.P.S. I "jjuuusstt might" be going through every side project listed here and offering my (un-asked-for) advice to the projects :)

Hey Brandon, I actually went out a few times already, just me and a guitar (no amplification) and did it!

Best of luck with your language course!

Hmmmm....sounds cool, but kinda tough if you aren't selling something unique. Anything that can easily be bought on Amazon is often much harder to compete nowadays than it was 10 years ago.

But I'm sure you'll learn a TON from projects like this Breandan! I sure did with all my silly projects over the years.

Oh that's cool Todd! You might have to grind it out in the beginning by showing up to stores and doing taste tests.

That will get you A LOT of valuable customer feedback to see if it's viable. Then maybe start hitting up some distributors and show them how this product can increase their sales!

Hey Joseph, just be warned, it's hard to let someone give you control of all your ads if you haven't managed a bunch of ads before.

Why don't you first try making some Wordpress websites for people? Maybe post something like this on your personal Facebook page:

    Hey Friends,

For $100 I will setup a full WordPress website for you within 24 hours.

Any website you need (can be a personal blog, photography portfolio, company website), I will make for you. If you’ve ever wanted a running website but didn’t know where to start, I’ll guide you through the whole process. We’ll hop on a call together and within 24 hours I’ll get your entire website up and running.

    These websites are designed so:

    –You can easily update them.

–They have a chance of getting ranked in search engines.

–You can send people your website link.

I am doing a very limited promotion of a flat $100 fee for this ENTIRE service. Many web developers charge starting at $125/hour, so this is extremely generous!

    Sincerely,

    Joseph – Phone/Text: 555-555-5555

P.S. If you know anyone that might want my help setting up an entire website, please tag them.

Nice James! Although I didn't see any obvious pictures of horses, and therefore kind of didn't get the point. Maybe add a big picture of a cute horse :)

Hmmm, what a unique angle Trent!

This sounds like a cool project where you won't get wide distribution, but A LOT of attention within your specific spa community!

Bahahahah, isn't it funny how a dog can have a way more popular Instagram account than the owner?? Love it!

Oh cool Boris! I bet studying up on how to get leads on LinkedIn (take a day to watch everything on YouTube and google about it, and take notes), and this could really help you reach out to those specific firms that need your service!

Oh nice Barbara, I think the course would teach you some cool ways to approach the project differently. Maybe for now you can try a quick MVP just using your Facebook and a Google Spreadsheet to highlight different artists?

Hey Candace, I love that you're doing a real-world service business, this kind of stuff is often easier to sell and more profitable than a lot of online things :) .

I think your website is fantastic and has all the good elements, but one of the MAIN ways you will make sales it through referrals.

Take a good look at this post, it has some concepts you can easily copy:

Awesome Kristen! I highly suggest everyone learn to setup their own blog and write stuff THEY like writing about....not just articles in an attempt to get traffic.

Documenting your journey is better than doling out same-old advice...and way more fun to do :)

My personal blog http://nevblog.com serves this purpose for me, and it's super rewarding!

Hey Sagi, looks like your site has some serious traction, congrats! Pretty funny extension, I speed up my YouTube videos by 1.5X usually. 2x I sometimes have trouble hearing properly.

But great idea for other services that otherwise don't let you watch at an increased speed!

I think it's cool if A LOT of people like it. Seems you're doing a good job!

One recommendation is to make sure Facebook isn't your only channel of distribution. Eventually that exposure will go down, and you'll need to make sure people are also subscribed to your other platforms like YouTube and email.

Best of luck Alex, awesome job!

Interesting Mike. Have you thought of maybe documenting your PERSONAL journey from this, instead of dishing out advice right away?

Often that is far more compelling!

Oh yeah, looks good Matthew! Art is super visual, so just SHOWING it often is the best way to go.
