How to write an app store description (lessons learned from scraping the Top 100 FREE and PAID iOS app descriptions):

    App Store Descriptions Header

As a copywriter, I wanted to give you advice about how to write the description section for an app on the iOS app store.

However if you're searching for this info, you're probably a bit of a nerd.  And nerds like actual data, not the opinions of some random brown dude in Austin.

So we  stole  gathered some data for you to help you understand a little more about app description sections:

    • Broke up the study into two categories: Paid Apps, and Free Apps.
    • We scraped data from the Top 100 Paid iOS Apps.

    • We scraped data from the Top 100 Free iOS Apps.
    • App Store data was scraped on May 1st, 2016.
    • Data Scraped: App name, developer name, app store ranking, price, In-App Purchases, number of promo images, current version rating, overall rating, app description, word count, and if the description contains bullet points.

You can see the raw data for both the free and paid apps by clicking these big blue buttons below (the large text blocks of descriptions make it a bit messy, my apologies):

Top 100 Free Apps Raw Data  paid-apps-data

    Top 100 Paid Apps Findings:

Developer with most number of apps

Number of paid promotional images for apps

    App Description Number of Words

    Bought Every App

    Paid App Pricing

In app purchases number of apps

    Paid word counts in apps

    Top 100 Free Apps Findings:

Top 100 Free Apps Description Word Count

    Most Free Apps Developer Google

    Free apps bullet point usage

Free apps not using bullet points

    Promotional images in free apps

Free apps that have in-app purchases

    Free app word counts chart

So after learning all this, how do you write an app store description?

Quite honestly, from looking at the data, there seems to be no super-strong correlation between your app store description and the ranking you will receive. So here's some tips to follow:

Tip #1: You "really" have less than 50 words to describe your app.

You can see evidence that a lot of people aren't interested in the full app description by the iOS App Store snipping the amount people auto-load.  This is what people generally see.

App Store Description Length On Phone

Tip #2.) Focus on your icon and promotional images....not so much the description.

The bulk of the "Downloading Decision" will come from your app icon and promotional images. These images are viewed far more than the description text.

If they are looking for a calculator.....make your calculator app icon look something like....you know, A CALCULATOR:

    calculator app icons

Don't try to be "too clever" and design your icon as some inside joke.  It can botch the users split-second "Download Decisioning."  Keep it ultra ultra ultra self-explanatory.

You can follow the same advice with your promotional images (almost all the Top 100 apps have 5 promotional images). Make sure they clearly demonstrate what your app does either through screenshots or demonstrations.

Here's a good "demonstration" example by Duet Display, who shows some features and testimonials of the app right inside the promotional images:

    App Description Images iOS

Here's a "screenshots" example of the game War Tortoise where it just shows screenshots of the game:

Tip #3: Find inspiration from reading some other Top 100 app descriptions:

Lol....yeah there's a lot of different things I could do with the data, but from the results already, I'm not sure there would be MASSIVELY big (or interesting) changes.

I think just judging an app by the copy alone is a mistake, as there's so many other ranking factors that go into it (Ratings, Press, Images, Word of Mouth etc).

I'm not advocating that 250 words is best....but that it's simply the most COMMON amongst the data set.

Hahaha.....yeah a few people have suggested this, and I was originally going to do this, but I wanted to just SEE WHAT THE TOP DOGS ARE DOING.

I only wanted the data from the Top 100. I'm sure there's other experiments within here, but so far none of them seem super interested for the amount of time they'll take to gather & analyze & post about.

I don't THINK there is, although you could find out from the raw data!

It seems some of the apps (like SnapChat) have only 2 1/2 star ratings, yet are ranked in the top 10.

I think apps made by Facebook and Google can have low ratings but still remain in the top 100 (since those services you nearly HAVE to use).....however if there's a game app, it probably needs to have a high rating to stay in the top 100.

Thanks Daniel! I never saw any analysis of making app descriptions either, so I just did it :)

A number of people have suggested the same type of analysis, but quite frankly.....that seems boring as hell, so I'm probably not gonna do it! (just being honest here)....

After this experiment was done, I've come to the conclusion that the app description is one of the least important parts of the decision tree that people use to download apps. Therefore I probably won't spend much more effort re-evaluating the results for all the other apps.

Thank you for the suggestion though, lemme know if you end up doing it!

You are very welcome... it is a simple setup... if you want something a little fancier (say a layered photoshop template to look like the App Store) just let me know and I will put it together.

    1.) You're 100% right on that.

2.) I doubt there's a "sweet spot" for number of testimonials, but I'm aware that testimonials HELP.

3.) After running this data is seems like the app store description is helpful, but not crucial to an apps success. Outside marketing, number of ratings, number of users etc all seem to have a bigger impact on the success of an app.

I just sent you an updated template (complete with graphic/photo placeholders)... this way it feels more like an App Store layout. It still includes the word count. I also provided instructions with screenshots on how you can easily change the placeholder graphics to your own custom content.

Hey, Thanks for the article. Really appreciate you giving out REAL value for free. Not many people do that today and if they do i doubt it is up to this standard. Keep doing what you're doing. Thanks

    Hi

What tool do you use to scrap all of this data? This information is tremendous. I am sharing it with my team right now, wait that's me. I really love all of your posts and information that you provide. I am a one person web team so all this helps get a little further ahead with limited resources. Love getting your emails because I am constantly learning.

    Thanks

Hey Jen, there's no single tool to scrape info. Each case is different, some of it is manual collection, some of it is scripts. Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for reading :)

Thanks for sharing Salomon! In-app-description SEO definitely works, but only like it does for content on the web.....it's a MUST HAVE, but also you MUST HAVE other promotional alleys. Simple putting "productivity tool" in an app name or description will only take you so far without other marketing.

    Thanks for your input!

    Thank you Alex :)

1.) Saying something like "The #1 app used by residents of Seattle!!" would probably be a great thing to advertise. You can also do that in the app images which seem to get more eyeball views.

2.) They should demonstrate awesome features, and at least one slide should be dedicated to testimonials.

3.) It has SOME impact. But like normal SEO for webpages, it's just a piece of puzzle, not the WHOLE puzzle. Promotion outside the app store is needed also. App markets will also feature apps that bring in a lot of money over ones that do not.

    4.) Vague question.

Glad you like the newsletter, hope I can keep sending you cool stuff like this :)
