Let's Make a Freeway Sign For a Gym Together!

Let's try a little experiment together, where we build out some signs to promote a gym, and see what happens! (Comment below with your suggestions).

    Let's get started:

This is Hale Fitness in Richmond, CA.

    hale-fitness1.jpg

It's next to a giant freeway called Highway 80:

    highway-80-sanfran.jpg

Between 30,000 and 50,000 cars pass by the Hale Fitness location everyday. Wow.

    surprise emoji

    The rough numbers of eyeballs:

The freeway Hale Fitness is on is Highway 80, which is about 12 minutes from the Bay Bridge that takes you into to San Francisco.

30,000 to 50,000 cars per day pass by this area.

Let's meet in the middle and say 40,000 cars per day pass by Hale Fitness.

    1 day  x  40,000 cars  = 40,000 cars

    1 week  x  40,000 cars  = 280,000 cars

    1 month  x  40,000 cars  = 1,200,000 cars

    1 year  x  40,000 cars  = 14,600,000 cars

This means even a SUPER TINY AMOUNT of people responding to these advertisements can mean significant signups for a gym.

There's already some dinky signs and flags other businesses have put up:

We are thinking of making some freeway signs like this tiny one, but way bigger:

    freeway sign small

The copy might be something like this:

Here's a crude mockup of the signs:

Hale Fitness already has strong local SEO and ratings on all review platforms:

Jason (a Copywriting Course Member) co-owns Hale Fitness:

    jason-hale-fitness.jpg

And he's agreed to let Copywriting Course help make what the signs say!

We've done similar outdoor advertising experiments in the past...

    outdoor advertising copywriting

Billboard Advertising Experiment  |  Street Advertising Experiment

    ...with great results!

    Street advertising change to sign

The signs will go along the fence right by the freeway shown here:

    hale-fitness-freeway-location.gif

Let's see what results Hale Fitness gets...and we need YOUR help figuring out what to write:

    hmmm

    Sincerely,

    The Copywriting Course

P.S. The top 3 commenters will get sent "You're Gonna Die" and "This Book Will Teach You How To Write Better" to anywhere in the world, for free.

I don’t care for negative statements like “loose weight”.  But prefer “gain” in statements like “gain strength” or be statements “be strong” “be healthy”

I am always turned off by negative verbage

    1. Lowest membership price( know your market)

    2. Lockers and AC ( list commodities)

    3. Hours of operation w/ contact information

The objective is to make the commuter get off the freeway.

If using the same 3-billboard/signs as Neville's example, I'd go with the following (adding a 4th sign - or combining 1&2 if limited to 3):

    1) Sick of 2020?

    2) We can help!

    3) Be a better you at Hales Fitness.

    4) Book now at halefitness.com (easier to remember a website than phone number - unless it is the pneumonic John mentioned above, but there's also more content on their website than expecting people to call - I mean really, who calls anymore! LOL)

I don't know the highway at all so no idea if most of the time people are crawling or if the 40,000 cars are whizzing by - the amount and type of the message needs to adjust based on this - ie cars whizzing by at full speed will mean the messaging has to be even briefer and attention-getting, while people stuck in traffic will have more time to read and take action.

Hey Léo great question! I believe this location is ~12 min from the Bay Bridge so it DOES get pretty backed up during non-Covid times.

Maybe Jay can tell us if there's a lot of traffic there now!

I do like the idea of getting people stuck in traffic to the gym:

    Option 1:

    Sign 1: Get moving

    Sign 2: Without traffic

Sign 3: Hale Fitness. Workout on your own terms.

    Option 2

    Boost your health

    Not your car
