    #2.) Make it urgent

    image for step 2

These are some power words for driving sales by making people feel a sense of urgency.

    17 hours left.

17 hours left on this special deal.

17 hours left on this one-time-only deal.

17 hours before this deal expires.

17 hours before this goes away forever.

17 hours left before this deal goes to Deal Heaven forever.

    3 units left in stock.

3 of these are left.  After that, they're gone forever.

    Only 3 spots are open.

    Only 3 spots are left.

Only 3 seats are available for this one-time event.

Only 3 tickets left, and a lot of interest in them.

I hate to say this, but we're about 4 minutes from being sold out.

    First come, First serve.

This is one a first-come-first-serve basis.

    Hurry up, it's almost over.

If you want to start this month, you have to buy today.

This won't happen again for another 6 months.

Buy it now or forever hold your peace.

Have fun paying full price after this deal is over.

    50% off for just today.

50% off this holiday season only.

    50% while we're overstocked.

50% off the full price for today only.

    $120 off the full price.

    Prices go up tomorrow.

Due to demand, prices go up tomorrow.

Don't wait till tomorrow, this deal will be gone.

If you like paying more for the same item, then wait till tomorrow.

This is a great deal.  Grab it now while it lasts.

    This promo is almost over.

You won't see this price for another 12 months.

It's going to be hard to beat this deal.

    Limited time only.

    5...4...3...2...1...this deal is almost over.

A stupidly-low price for just a little while longer.

This kind of deal only happens when we're over stocked.

This doesn't happen often, so grab it now.

For a short while you get the product, but also ALL these bonuses.

Keep this private....but we're closing out the month and I need to meet a quota, so if you buy now I'll knock 30% off the cost.

There are big shortages in the supply chain, so once this batch is sold out the price will increase.

We had a great year, so we're giving everyone 20% off for our birthday.

Here's a $25 coupon you can use for this month.

    #3.) Make it free

    image for step 3

Making something free is the lowest-friction way to get someone to take an offer. Here's some "Free Phrases" to entice them.

    Totally free for you.

    100% free for you.

    100% free today.

100% free for the first 12 months.

    $0 down.

    You pay $0 today.

    $0.00 is all it costs.

    Today only: $0.00.

The cost to you: Exactly zero dollars and zero cents.

    You pay Zilch.

    You pay NOTHING.

This is our free gift to you.

Don't worry about the price.....it's zero.

The most affordable price ever: ZERO

Low on money?  Good.  Because the price is zero.

One cent?  That's too high.  Let's make it zero.

Hahah....other people pay MONEY for this stuff.

5 years ago I paid $3,000 for this....you're getting it free.

    $1,000?  $500?  $250?  $75?  $10?  How about $0?

    Pick your price: A.) $1,000   |   B.) $200  |  C.) $0.00

    You + Me = FREE.

My favorite price in the world: Free.

Give me $0 and I'll send you all my products.

Give me $0 and I'll hook you up for a month.

Give me $0 and I'll give you a free month of service.

Zero is my favorite number.  That's also the cost.

I know you'll like it so much, that I'll give it to you for $0 the first month.

Move in now and pay $0 the first month.

Walk out of the store paying $0.

#4.) Give them different options to choose

    image for step 4

People have different needs and different budgets. It can help to offer a few different options.

    1 for $20. 2 for $25

Basic package: $30/month. Pro Package: $50/month. Advanced Package: $80/month.

Starter Plan Advanced Plan Professional Plan

#5.) Show what an amazing value it is

    image for step 5

People understand by analogy. So compare how great a value something is compared to a familiar item.

You're getting this entire bodybuilders meal plan for less than the price of a protein shake.

This costs less than the price of a large pizza.

This cruise vacation will cost you less per day than going to Disney Land.

8 out of my last 10 clients have quit their jobs.....all because they signed up.

The whole product costs less than a ticket and popcorn at the movies.

Only $3.99 for an app that can teach your child a different language.

Only $0.99 for an app that you will use every single day.

    It's only $1.95 per day.

You probably spend more on Starbucks every month than this entire coffee maker costs.

It's only $10 more than the competition, yet will last 5x longer.

Buying from us is like buying from Nordstrom vs. Wal-Mart.

Some people buy TV's with their tax return.  Some people buy investments in their future.

Costs less per day than your daily coffee.

Only $2.99/day to invest in your future.

A college computer science class costs $6,000.  This course costs only $69 total.

This entire course costs less than one college computer science book.

Upgrading your website to Professional Level costs less than $0.25/day.

It's weird how people will spend $60 on drinks at a bar, but won't buy a $39 book that can change their life.

For the price of a dirty martini you can buy this book that'll change your life.

You can spend the next 3 months reading random blog posts and watching

YouTube videos, or you can spend $197 to have it professionally explained for you.

$97/month gets you private access to me.  Normally it costs $597/hour to speak with me.

Why spend $900 on a new TV, when you can spend $900 for a once-in-a-lifetime experience?

I know your weekends are fun, but if you come to our seminar, you'll spend only $600 for the whole weekend, and learn a new skill you can use to advance your career.

Pay just $100 more now to buy Nakamoto tires, and they'll each last you 10,000 miles longer.  That's like saving over $1,100!

#6.) Get them to take action

    image for step 6

Stop reading this email right now, and try playing this guitar lick on the E string: 3-5-3-8-3

After you're done installing the program, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and restart your computer.

Enter your website URL and email address, and I'll send your customized

SEO report to your email.  It will take about 20 minutes to prepare.

#7.) Tell them a personal story

    image for step 7

People often learn through analogy. So tell them a story to educate them.

"When I was in college and posting on a blog, I never in a million years thought I could make money from it...."

"The best decision I ever made in my life was learning how to write copy...."

"When I was fat I just always assumed I would be fat, because that was my entire identity.....then a friend dragged me to a yoga class and it all changed."

"I'd probably still be working at McDonald's if I never sought out to find a mentor...."

"The scariest thing I ever did (and keep in mind I've given birth to 6 kids) was quit my job of 15 years...."

"Before taking that class I never in a million years thought I could start my own business.  I didn't even know anyone who'd ever started a business...."

"I was lucky and started my first business in high school where I learned that you can CREATE money by giving people stuff they want and need."

"It's weird how my journey to becoming a millionaire started.  It all began when I threw a penny down a magical wishing well...."

"The first time I bought a car I didn't know what I was doing and got ripped off badly.  I regretted the purchase for years.  Then I discovered the art of negotiation.  I just walked out of the dealership paying 20% less than everyone else."

"Before I learned how to negotiate I would accept any price someone told me.  That was until I did The Coffee Challenge. That showed me that ALL prices are negotiable."

"I really hated accounting.  That's why I forced myself to take a class on it.  It's one of the best decisions I ever made.  I could notice holes in my revenue I never saw before."

"I've been to defensive driving classes 4 times.  The first three were so incredibly mind-numbing.  I was happy to discover going to COMEDY Defensive Driving with Jim was 6 hours of fun!"

"The first real business I started was just purely out of curiosity to see if I could build it.  I never actually expected it to make money, but it did!"

"Taking a class on copywriting immediately improved my cold email skills.  I closed 3 new clients the next day as a result of cold emails (in the past I NEVER closed deals through cold emails)!"

#8.) Give a Before/After case study or testimonial

    image for step 8

Showing pictures or telling examples about the changes people made after your product can be very inspiring.

"Casey was 245 pounds and depressed when he came to me.  After a year of training at my camp, he was down to 180 and full of confidence.

"Before Matt's training, I was hitting about 3 out of 10 pitches.  After Matt's training, I was hitting 9 out of 10."

"My car used to do 0-60 in 9 seconds....after I took it to Ronaldo's High Performance they had it doing 0-60 in 4 seconds."

"My car used to get so hot in the summer the leather would burn my legs.  After going to Mother's Window Tint the car stays nice and cool."

Mike's trading account balance before me: $15,000 Mike's trading account balance after me: $700,000

Before my class: Robert was $3,000 in debt. After my class: Robert had $5,000 in savings.

"I was always nervous and scared to talk with new people, but after Jordan's bootcamp I can easily make new friends at any event I go to."

"In the past I would constantly yo-yo diet and gain the weight back.  It wasn't until I used MyBodyTutor that I could finally keep the weight off permanently."

"Before this business mastery class I couldn't even use Excel.  It was embarrassing at work to take longer than everyone else to finish my assignments.  After the class I'm actually helping my boss with her Excel questions!"

"It's amazing how much I've changed since joining Matt's Gym.  When friends who I haven't seen in six months see me, they can't believe I'm the same person.  They always knew me as a big guy, but now I'm a ripped guy!"

"There used to be NO WAY I'd wake up in the morning before 8:30am.  After downloading the Wakeful app, it's actually a pleasure waking up!"

"One of the craziest transformations I've ever seen was this guy named George who simply couldn't look people in the eye and talk to them.  After the bootcamp he was mingling, making friends, and being the life of the party with no problem."

"The best part about the results I got was the change of my mindset about food. Before I used to view food as something to stuff in my mouth when bored.  Now I view it as fuel."

Jeff was always fighting with his family members.  Yet after my class, his entire family suddenly stopped fighting with him.  What Jeff realized was the tools he learned in this seminar changed HIM, not his family.

"Before everyone thought I dressed like a bum.  After a style consult with Jennifer I'm getting compliments everyday on my new outfits!"

"Before I learned the art of copywriting I didn't research products before I built them.  After I started THINKING LIKE A COPYWRITER I began to realize I could sell a product before it's ever built, and test if it works."

"The fact is I could have never gotten out of my student debt without Rick's help.  He got me on an affordable plan and got me debt free in 2 years."
Before: 312 pounds After: 189 pounds

"Before I was all saggy and wrinkly on my face.  After going to The Med Spa I look 15 years younger."

"Before I was always chained to a desk.  I liked my job, but only got 14 days off a year.  After becoming a copywriter I started getting gigs that I could finish from anywhere in the world."

#9.) Tell them a surprising fact

    image for step 9

Tell them some things about the product that are really cool and unique.

This iPhone case is made out of the same stuff as the windows on the space shuttle.

This climbing rope is meant for one person, but can actually take 7,000 pounds of force before breaking.

The Tesla Model S is actually the safest car that's EVER been tested by the Department of Transportation.

The Tesla Model S is so strong, it actually BROKE THE MACHINE used to test lateral impact.

This pen uses the same pressurized cartridges the astronauts on the International Space Station use.

We've had 14 people become millionaires this year alone by using my system.

These wet suits are made from synthetic shark skin so you can swim faster.

This tape uses the same principle to stick to any surface as a gecko's feet does.

This carbon fiber is 5 times stronger than steel, and 10 times lighter.

This car has the highest power-to-weight ratio of any street-legal car.

This Tesla electric car gets more torque off the starting line than a McLaren.

This automated tractor can till 30 acres in just one hour....without a driver!

This knife is so sharp it can actually cut through a penny.

This knife is so sharp you can slice a tomato with one hand.

This protein bar has more protein-per-ounce than any other bar on the market.

This martini is sprinkled with actual 24K gold flakes.

This diamond ring once was actually worn by Queen Victoria.

This is the house they filmed the first John Connor scenes in Terminator 2.

This kobe beef is made from cows who are fed well and massaged in sake everyday.

Our cloud service is really scalable, in fact 80% of Fortune 500 companies use us.

This iPhone case is so strong you can over your phone with a semi-truck and it won't break.

    #10.) Get them curious

    image for step 10

Curiosity gets people to want to experience your product.

See what it's like to be in a room where everyone makes more than $1,000,000/year.

    I have a gift I want to send you.....but I can't describe it here.

Inside the members area you'll get 26 videos plus 3 amazing bonuses that get physically delivered to your door.

Every order comes with a mystery bottle of wine.  Some prize bottles are worth $10, and some are work $800.

You have to see through these polarized lenses to believe it.

Until you hear what a Bose system sounds like in person....there's no way to describe it.

Our nightclub has the most expensive sound system in history.  You must feel it to believe it.

The Tesla Model S is so fast to accelerate, most people have never experienced that many G-forces on their body.

These sheets are 1,800 thread count.  You've never felt anything so soft before.

These Night & Day contacts are super-breathable, so your eyes don't even feel them.

Our shirts are made of a special poly-blend we closely guard.  Most people can't believe how smooth they feel.

Old Spice deodorant works so well.....just try it on before a workout and see if you can feel the difference.

These advanced bearings make your skateboard ride so smooth, you have to try them to believe it.

Until you pick up a Trek Speed Bike with one finger, you'll never understand just how light it is.

It doesn't matter what super car you've been in.....our Tesla will launch you (silently) to 60 MPH faster than any of them.  You've never felt anything quite like it. Come test drive one to experience it.

There's no way to describe what it feels like to wear this underwear.
It's difficult to describe virtual reality headsets because it's unlike anything you've ever experienced.  Like you're ACTUALLY there.

See the movie in IMAX quality, you can't understand how much richer the experience is until you've sat in that chair.

We could describe how good this massage chair feels, but it's simply impossible till you've tried it.

I could tell you our seminars "change people's lives", but you'll never experience it without being in this city, in this room, with these people.

You've seen all my free content, now just imaging how good my paid content is.

One of the things I'm proudest of is when people walk out of the room saying, "Oh my god....that was so much better than I ever possibly expected."

Burning Man is one of those experiences where you can see pictures, watch movies, and read reviews....but you can never know what it's like till you go.

Being in The Vortex in Sedona is a magical experience for some people. Come see if you feel it's energy.

The new MacBook is so light that it kind of confuses your brain, because you've never picked up anything that size that weighs so little.
Using the Retina display on a Mac makes it look like real life, not just a screen.

On your first aircraft carrier takeoff you'll experience G forces like nothing else you can even compare to.

#11.) Tell them alternate uses for the same product

    image for step 11

A lot of times customers won't even know a product can do multiple things. So tell them:

This blender acts as four devices: A blender, a chopper, a drink maker, a soup maker.

This course is going to be your Mentor, your Spiritual Guide, and your Accountability Buddy.

This Dyson fan acts as a work of art....and also a fan.

This pocket knife has all the tools you'd expect, and even an emergency radio signal.

This Mercedes is a great car.....but also a status symbol.

This TV also connects directly to the internet so you can watch Hulu and Netflix.

This Dyson vacuum also has a "wet jet" setting to steam your hardwood floors.

My membership area has all my videos about how to become a consultant, and also comes a whole "Template Section" that you can copy/paste to your own clients.

This book about coffee tables also TURNS INTO a coffee table.  (Seinfeld joke) 😉

This simple notebook can act as your daily diary, your to-do list, or your trust book for taking class notes.

This drawing app not only lets you draw, but also professionally edit large batches of photos.

Our Google Docs product started as just a Word-like editor, but now has a suite of other products like spreadsheets, presentation, and forms.

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday July 8th, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday July 8th, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

🎤 Listen to this email here:

    #1.) Swipe:

I love the use of "negative space" in this old typewriter ad that showcases its new “erase” feature by leaving the top part of the page blank:

    typewriter-ad.jpg

    #2.) Thought:

I made a list of 90 different questions to ask about your own business. I posted the first 20 here last week, here's another 20:

"Is your income one-time or recurring? Is there a way to make it more steady through a recurring product?"

"If you were starting over, would you start this business again?"

"Which book influenced you? Can you re-read it and implement strategies?"

"Which person in your company could you NOT get rid of? What are their good qualities?"

"Which person in your company can you get rid of? Can you divert their pay into something/someone more useful?"

"What would Warren Buffet do with your company?"

"What would Elon Musk do with your company?"

"What would Mark Zuckerberg do with your company?"

"What natural advantage do you have over others? Can you double down on that?"

"What are YOU truly good at that few others can do? Can you double down on that talent?"

"Which industry could you make more money doing what you do now?"

"You only get to keep ONE customer…who would it be? What about them makes them ideal? Can you find more like them?"

"Where do you think your industry will be in 5 years? 10 years?"

"If you wanted to sell your company today, would you be able to do it? What’s holding you back?"

"Do you track all your numbers properly? Do you review them?"

"You only have 1 hour a week to grow your business….what would you do during that hour for most impact?"

"What makes customers smile when they buy your product?"

"Define your ideal customer in one word…."

"What outcome do you want in 5 years from this business?"

"What about your company are you proud of?"

"Do your customers tell their friends about you? What do they say?"

    #3.) Uplifting:

    image for step 3

This was a hot week of podcasts.....as a very large consumer of podcasts, I was impressed by these three conversations this week:

1 🎙Marc Andreesen on Joe Rogan [Link]

2 🎙Demis Hassabis On Lex Fridman [Link]

3 🎙Balaji Srinivasan on Tim Ferriss [Link]

I started college in 2001, and the only way to hear high-level talks from billionaires and heads of industries was go to conferences.

Only a few people could attend these, afford these, or be in close proximity to these.

Now with any phone you can listen to the smartest people in the world talk for hours.

I'm still in awe of this, and can't believe podcasts like this are free...you get to be a fly on the wall in an amazing conversation.

**Side-Note** The image of the podcasting bear above was AI generated by Dall-E 2 with the prompt: "Photo of an oversized grizzly bear wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket being interviewed on the Joe Rogan Podcast Experience."

    #4.) Picture:

I did a handstand in The Hamptons over 4th of July weekend 🙂

    nev-handstand-hamptons.jpg

    #5.) Interesting:

I don't know much about Kylie Jenner.
I don't know much about makeup.

But these KylieSkin vending machines I saw at the airport seem like a great idea:

    kyile-makeup-sale.jpg

Selling makeup products via vending machine at an airport seems like good biz:

    • Product doesn't go bad.
    • Selling only popular items.
    • This stands out at the airport.
    • No permanent retail staff needed.
    • When on trips people willing to spend money to look good.

    #6.) Drawing:

It’d be cool if there was a product that’s a cold plunge, hot tub, and sauna in one. This combo is becoming very popular.

Something that combines them all into one unit would be awesome:cold-plunge-hot-tub-sauna.webp

This combination has become increasingly popular. The circuit I've seen most described is:

    1.) Sauna: Get really hot.

2.) Cold Plunge: Get out when really cold.

3.) Hot Tub: Feels good after cold

    REPEAT

Each one of these products is good on it's own, but as a combination they are amazing. I wish someone would make a single product that combines this!

Hope you enjoyed these little tidbits, have a happy Friday!

Powerwashing Flyers that took business from zero to $13,202 per month

    powerwashing-driveway-money.png

I’m posting this guest post because I LOVE IT when people get their hands dirty in order to make money.

I think there’s more lessons to be learned by getting out there and doing small jobs than any amount of reading blog posts.

Using some basic copywriting principles in his marketing, Peter went from making $0 with his powerwashing service...to doing $13,202 per month!

So here’s Peter showing the exact business flyers he used to “automate his marketing” instead of going door-to-door.

Watch for the subtle psychological things happening with each flyer:

    ————PETER STARTS TALKING NOW————
    ————PETER STARTS TALKING NOW————
    ————PETER STARTS TALKING NOW————

There was no way in hell I was ever doing that again…..

I had just gotten back from going door-to-door trying to sell power washing after hearing from my Dad that it was “a good business to get your feet wet.”

After 2 or 3 anxiety-filled hours of stuttering my way through a pitiful little sales pitch and getting zero results, I gave up.

I don’t know if you’ve ever gone door-to-door before, but for me, especially at the time, it honestly felt like I could have been offering FREE money and people still would have said no.

    I felt like a pest!

If you’re at all introverted (like me), or you’re not the smoothest on your feet, then you gotta knock on like 100 doors before you find someone….and it’s absolute agony the whole time.

So, unless you’re trying to get over your fear of rejection, don’t try powerwashing this way.

I’m going to show you exactly how I went from $0 to over $10,000 a month without ever knocking on a door or making a cold call.

The First (lame) Attempt at Marketing:

After deciding I was never going to go door-to-door ever again, I designed a beautiful flyer, that looked something like this…

    powerwashing-marketing13.png

It was so pretty and nice….

    ….but it absolutely BOMBED!

I got my friend to deliver a couple hundred of them and I didn’t get a single phone call.

I was shocked… (what an idiot I was).

Now if you’ve been following Neville for any period of time, you’re probably a lot smarter than I was at the time.

You know why this flyer is sooo bad and you probably know how to write at least basic KOPY… like telling people WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM and offering some bloody benefits…

But I was stressing because I had no idea what benefits I could show.

I started thinking what it was going to look like I was going to have to get a job unless I figured out this whole marketing thing QUICK!

I had a little bit of money left after my backpacking trip in South East Asia got cut short due to a motorcycle accident… but not much…

So, I went to my Dad, hat-in-hand, with my “beautiful”, terrible little flyer and asked him what I was doing wrong…

He laughed, handed me an old Dan Kennedy book on direct response marketing and a few chapters later, I threw away my first “beautiful” attempt.

I started again from scratch.  This time I didn’t care if the flyer was “beautiful” or “professional looking.”  I realized that didn’t matter.

    The Second Attempt At Marketing

Here’s what I came up with my second time around:

    powerwashing-marketing3.png

I printed out 100 of these new flyers on my little inkjet and got my friend to deliver them to a local neighborhood.

    100 flyers printed.  Total Cost = $20

But I was still scared, because after my first failure, I remember thinking, “there’s no way I’m going to get calls…”

But the phone rang…..it rang 4 times!!!

I didn’t even know what to say when I answered… I hadn’t really thought that part through!

But it didn’t really matter… my new customers did most of the talking (you’ll find people LOVE to tell you all about their situation).

Within a day, I got 4 new customers and which ended up turning into around $600 dollars in business.

    It blew my mind!

I thought, “Hey there’s a lot more neighborhoods…..and if I just send out more of these flyers….I should get a bunch more customers… this is so much better than knocking on doors!”

How to Turn a $69 Driveway Job Into $200+ Worth of Work:

When I met with the first customer, I didn’t suddenly learn how to become a sales star or even a smooth talker, or even know what the concept of an “upsell” was.  But I found out quickly.

Usually when people call you to powerwash their driveway, they like to walk around with you tell you their life story and while they’re at it, also show you what they want cleaned…

And usually, there’s a bunch of other dirty stuff right beside the thing they want cleaned.

So there was one thing I would say that worked really well with making more money. It honestly just seemed natural to ask it.

    I would just ask:

“Would you like _____ cleaned too?”

People go… “Yea, geez… hmm yea. I didn’t think about that but now that you mention it can you clean that to?”

And you get 80%+ of people saying yes.

I feel like an idiot when I don’t ask… which is a little too often.

Hiring a Roller Blader and Going From $600 to $6,292:

So I quickly learned that I just needed to send out more flyers to get more customers.

I bought a bigger printer and I hired my friend to go out on his rollerblades and deliver 1,600 flyers each week at $0.18 cents per flyer. (At the time I didn’t know about Every Door Direct Mail in the U.S. or Unadressed Admail in Canada… which is what I do now and actually cheaper and more reliable than my friend).

And like clockwork, I would get at least 15 jobs… enough to keep me fully booked for the whole week.

It would cost me on average $25 to get a customer… and I’d bring in on average $200 from each customer right away… that’s 8x my money, which is pretty awesome math.

That’s like having a machine that I throw $100 into, and it throws $800 right back at me.

And as long as these flyers kept being profitable… I kept sending them out.

Mailing 16x to One Neighborhood and Still Getting New Customers:

It was amazing how I could tweak the flyer a tiny bit and send it to the SAME neighborhoods every other week and I would still get more and more people calling in!

One neighborhood in particular, I sent flyers to them 16x one summer and it was still profitable in bringing new people in:

    • People would have family coming over to visit and needed to get the home nice and clean…
    • Or they were getting their home ready to sell…
    • Or they’d see I cleaned their neighbors driveway and realize they wanted theirs done too…

People’s circumstances change and you’ve got to be there when they do.

By hyper focusing on neighbourhoods, you can quickly become the dominate player and can quickly end up cleaning 20% or more of the homes in an area.

Besides mailing a bunch I found these 3 things worked really well and would take one customer and turn it into 2 or 3 more…

Getting Neighbors as Customers Without Door Knocking:

For a service business like this… you make a lot more money by not wasting time and gas traveling long distances between jobs.

A lot of these powerwashing guys are driving all over the place because they’re not doing targeted marketing…

I’ve been able to stay busy in a small town with 5,000 homes and not have to venture out to any of the surrounding areas by doing three things:

The first thing I did this was mailing a letter like this before I was going to do a job…

    powerwashing-marketing11.png

The second thing was by having a sign and wearing high visible reflective gear:

    powerwashing-marketing9-300x187.png

    powerwashing-marketing8-300x224.jpg

I was such an idiot in the beginning and went without a sign for a long time!  As a result people didn’t realize I was for hire.

The first day I got a sign, I had a lady come up and end up hiring me for $2,000 worth of work… that alone turned out to be a pretty good ROI on my $40 signs!

The third thing is to send a letter like this to the neighbors afterwards…

    powerwashing-marketing10.png

    The Free Driveway Experiment:

Would you spend $90 and work for free for a week… if you knew it would make you $21,000+?

    I hope you would.

Because that’s how I got 45 out of 90 homes in a neighborhood to become customers, which has so far resulted in more than $21,000 in business.

    Let me explain…

After cleaning a few driveways I started to notice something very interesting:

As soon as I cleaned someone’s driveway and they were able to see what a difference it made and how awesome it was to save 5 hours of back breaking, clothes soaking, mud splashing labour… it was like a switch had been flipped…

It was like suddenly they were the kind of people who clean their home and pay someone to do it for them.

They’d inevitably ask me if I could clean a bunch of other stuff for them and it would result in each customer being worth anywhere from $200 to as much as $2,000.

And it really got me thinking…

If I can just get someone started and committed to taking that little baby step, then the rest becomes really easy…

So, I picked a gated community of 90 homes, where I had already done some work and I sent out this letter for a free driveway cleaning:

    powerwashing-marketing5.png

    powerwashing-marketing12.png

    powerwashing-marketing7.png

I ended up getting 42 of them to become customers and it has resulted in over $21,000 in business!

    From $6,202 to $13,000

The key to scaling up from the $6,202 was to make sure I kept the “customer getting system” up and continuously working.

If you rest on your laurels and get lazy (which happened to me more than once), the business starts to dry up.

At first I was going door-to-door myself trying to get business.  This didn’t work at all….not to mention it was extremely stress-inducing for me.

However when I started using copywriting principles to automate my marketing through flyers, it effectively got me from $50 an hour to being able to make $150/hr or more.

    Sincerely,

    Peter Van Straaten

    Hey, it’s Neville again:

Isn’t it pretty sweet how he found out that:

    • Knocking On Doors = Slow and ineffective.
    • Sending Out Flyers = Easy and profitable (with the right flyer).

Essentially the flyers were automating the job Peter was manually doing.

With concepts learned in The Copywriting Course it’s easy to see why this “pretty” flyer failed:

    powerwashing-marketing13.png

The flyers that did really well look ugly…..but they seem personal, genuine, and offer a real benefit to the reader!

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday July 1st, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday July 1st, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

🎤 Listen to this email here:

    Swipe:

Back in 1967 if it was dark photos barely came out, so this “Flashcube” was affixed to your camera and would light up simultaneously with your picture to light it up:

    kodak-flashcube-ad.jpg

These Flashcubes were only good for 4 shots before burning out. Each side of the flashcube would burn out after each shot.

With modern smartphones and lights it's almost hard to believe this is how people used cameras!

    Thought:

I've been planning out some "thought provoking business questions" you can ask of your own business.

I currently have 90 of them, but here are the first 20:

    1. Why did you decide to start this business?
    2. Can you describe your product in one sentence?
    3. What main benefit does someone get if they buy your product?
    4. What is the best method you’ve found to sell your product?
    5. Why did you start a business in this specific industry?
    6. What would you do if you had to start this business again from scratch?
    7. Do you have a 1 year plan? 5 year plan? 10 year plan?
    8. Do you want to run this business forever, or eventually sell it?
    9. If someone gave you $10million to grow your business, how would you use it?
    10. Who are my competitors?
    11. Who in my industry would I most like to be? What specific aspects of their company do you like?
    12. Which channel brings in the most customers? Can you double down on that?
    13. What’s my company's value proposition?
    14. Have similar companies to mine been sold for a lot of money?
    15. What can this company realistically grow to?
    16. How are my prices compared to my competitors?
    17. What if I 5x my pricing? Could I serve my best customers better?
    18. What bigger company would want to buy me? Why?
    19. What’s a bottleneck in your company? Is there a way to clear that?
    20. If you were to disappear for a week, which process in your company would break first?

I'll share more of these if people like them!

    Uplifting:

I really love this old Gatorade advertising which takes a rather scientific approach to why someone should drink Gatorade:

    gatorade-thirst-ad.png

Their ads eventually went the "brand-exposure" route as people got to know the name "Gatorade" such as this:

    gatorade-ads.PNG

...so it's kind of neat to see their original ads which had to explain to people WHY to drink Gatorade in the first place.

    Picture:

Here's a picture of my July 2022 Goals:

    july-todo-list.jpg

    Goal #1.) Podcast Outreach:
I've been doing more podcasts and live sessions on other people's platforms, and would love to do more. I've started to formalize this process a bit more.

Know of any cool podcasts or live sessions I would be helpful on?

Reply to this email and let me know!

    Goal #2.) Hire in-person researcher:
Almost everything I do is remote, so I supplement having in-person co-workers with frequent co-working sessions hosted at my place.

This July I want to hire an in-person researcher to help me write posts.

    This person would:
    - Be a researcher/writer to help me write posts & lists.
    - Help out writing and maintaining our CC community.
    - Come work (in person) with me 1-2 times per week.
    - I’m in Central East Austin, you would be close by.
    - Paid if you’re a writer/researcher

    Some more details:
    - You can come in 1-2 times/wk in person to East Austin (required).
    - Work can also be done remote, but want some in-person time.
    - You’ve already written some stuff. Link it to me!
    - You already have client work or a job where you write
    - Need someone with some writing experience. Not a mentorship.
    - Fun Bonus: You can make other content: Video, Social etc.

    Goal #3.) List --> T --> Y
I don't explain ALL my goals here 🙂

    Interesting:

    black-swan-event.webp

I've lived through two economic "crashes" in my income-earning lifetime:

    The 2001 Economic "Crash"
The economy was already shaky, with a big tech boom swinging up and down. Then 9/11 happened and business all stopped overnight. 9/11 seemed to be the "Black Swan Event" that toppled the shaky Jenga economy.

That event was something you couldn't really plan for. This spooked the world, and commerce slowed down.

    The 2008 Economic "Crash"
There was insane borrowing of money to buy houses....LOTS of houses! I knew people making $70k/yr who bought 4 expensive houses at a time, something almost unthinkable today.

In fact 2008-Neville who was 25 years old at the time running a small rave company bought a house by walking into the neighborhood selling office, and this is how it went:

Lender: "How much money do you make?"

Neville: "Well I'll have to go home and check first."

Lender: No don't worry, we'll just say $100k on the form. Approved!

    THAT'S IT.

Next thing I know the house was being built:

    nevs-house.PNG

In retrospect these lax (and borderline illegal) lending practices were destined to cause a problem.

In 2008 I sold the contract for that house. A month later in March 2008 the giant bank Bear Sterns went bankrupt, which seemed unthinkable, and this "Black Swan Event" toppled the economic house of cards.

    Lessons Learned:

    • They call these "crashes" but they should be called "things coming back down to Earth."

    • You generally hear rumblings of an economic crash before it comes, and then an unpredictable "Black Swan Event" happens which topples it (sounds like we're in this area now).

    • Good deals on stocks and real estate come after the Black Swan Event...often around 1-2 years after, but not immediately.

    • People who have cash 1-2 years after "The Black Swan Event" scoop up tons of deals at cheap prices.

    • During a crash all the news is bad.....but most people will still have jobs, people still do things, people still buy things, people still spend money. The world turns as usual.

    • Instead of reckless hiring and blowing money on dumb things, companies start to focus on optimization of what they've already got. Once again reminding me of this great book title:

    getting-everything-you-can.webp

    Drawing:

Halfway through 2022 is the perfect time to start, prepare, and optimize for Q3 and especially Q4. We'd love to have you inside our community where people are constantly optimizing and testing their pages/emails/pitches:

    2nd half of 2022

The easiest way to grow a business is first optimize everything you've already got.

For example, if you want to optimize your business for the rest of 2022, just having rough goals like this could be helpful:

    12 monthcalendar for copywriting course.png

Or even doing something simple as pre-preparing for seasonal events can position you better

    calendar-scratch.png

I personally plan out each month with a little goal sheet like this:

    daily-to-do-lists.png

Then for yearly goals I'll sit around with some buddies and discuss, then come up with a few solid goals:

It feels like change is in the air for the world....maybe some recession-style stuff. This is often when great companies get built.

I'm curious, how are you planning for the 2nd half of the year?
    • Write down goals?
    • Discuss with friends?
    • Other methods?

In the 1960's Volkswagen did an ad campaign which featured some clever "Marketing Judo" by turning the laughably small-and-funny-looking Beetle into the top selling car in the world.

Look at these awesome ads starting in 1960 going to 1969:

    vw-ads-group-a.png

Almost every Volkswagen Beetle ad they ran poked fun of the Beetle's small size and odd appearance...

...but in the copy went on to brag how it's small size was a feature:
    - Almost no maintenance costs
    - Made it very fuel efficient
    - Easily replaceable parts
    - Very high quality
    - Very cheap

    vw-ads-group-b.png

The formula for each ad was:

    → Sarcastic headline
    → Eye catching image
→ Talk about how it's size/shape made for a great car

    vw-ads-group-c.png

This was a massively popular campaign, and from 1960 to 1973 the VW Beetle was the top selling car in the world!

You can see high res versions of these ads on our blog:
    CopywritingCourse.com/blogs/64

    Thought:

I love it when in ONE FRAME a social media post explains a concept.

By simply viewing that one image you can learn something new.

    Here's a few examples:

Optimizing an Instagram profile, in one pic:

    how-to-optimize-your-ig-profile.webp

How to pick a watermelon, in one pic:

    how-to-pick-a-watermelon.webp

I like how there's zero fluff in these pictures....just pure information!

    Uplifting:

I propose a new AirBnb program called “Good Neighbors.”

    neighbors.jpg

What it is: AirBnB hosts can share a small cut of booking revenue with select neighbors. Easy!

    This program could:
    - Make neighbors happy, and WANT more bookings.
    - Get neighbors to consider signing up to AirBnb.

So I live next door to an AirBnB charging $1,200+/night.

    On occasion I experience:
    • People opening my gates, tripping the alarm system.
    • Wrong Uber Eats deliveries at weird hours of night.
    • Randoms parking by my house.

These small annoyances increasingly frustrate me since I have no control over them, and don't get any profit from them.

    Solution 👉🏼

The "Good Neighbors Program" would allow my neighbor to "cut me in on the action."

This way the "negative externalities" I'm experience would be compensated.

Even a few hundred dollars a month would turn my neighbor's AirBnB from an Enemy to an Asset!

    Everyone wins 🙂

It would be Implemented like this:

The AirBnB host selects account to share bounty with.

Share Option 1: Share a percentage of revenue.
EX: "You get 1% of all booking revenue"

Share Option 2: Share set fee per new booking.
EX: "You get $50 per booking"

    With this program:

    AirBnB wins!
    Host wins!
    Neighbor wins!

This was a fun idea, I sent it to AirBnB, and hopefully this gets implemented in the near future.

Did you know you can use •bullet points• to create art on a page?

    • You can
    • make a descending
    • list out of them like this.

    • Or you can start long and
    • make them shorter
    • and end in a
    • point.

    • Or you
    • can make them
    • go up and down something
    • kinda like this
    • too.

You can make awesome "Bullet Points" with Emoji. Examples:

One of the most fascinating people in my life is my friend Nick Gray:

    nev-blue-shirt.png

He moved to Austin two years ago, barely knew anybody, and within 6 months had bigger networks than almost anyone I know.

He did this by throwing what he calls "2-Hour Cocktail Parties" where everyone must wear a name tag 😂

Look how every picture has people wearing name tags:

    gallary-nick-gray-party.png

He insists on name tags because it creates easier communication at his parties...and even gives people something to talk about:

He's very specific on how to write name tags and has whole blog posts about it:

    name-yes.png

    name-no.png

Nick doesn't fit the normal mould of a party-thrower because:
    - He doesn't drink.
    - He doesn't like to stay out past 9:30pm.
    - He doesn't like rowdiness or drunkenness.

That's why he wrote a book about throwing parties...specifically for people who don't normally throw parties (and want everyone out of their house by 9:30pm)!

Here's his book, which I've personally used all his tactics:
The 2-Hour Cocktail Party: How to Build Big Relationships with Small Gatherings

    how-to-build-relationships.webp

I have some awesome friends I've met through hosting events, hopefully this book will encourage more people who AREN'T used to hosting events to host something (his goal is get 500 people this year to host a "2 Hour Party."

Here's some articles Nick wrote on throwing a "2 Hour Party"
How to Host a Happy Hour
How to Plan a Networking Event
    How to Do Icebreakers

    Classic Volkswagen Beetle Ads

    image.png

The Volkswagen Beetle was a remarkably weird car when it came out.

    • It was slow.
    • It was small.
    • It was gas efficient.

It was the total opposite of all major cars of the day!

Since they couldn't advertise the car based on speed and cool-factor, they went the total opposite and showed how cheap and reliable it was.

Let's go through some of these Classic Volkswagen "Bug" Ads:

    #1.) "Lemon" (1960)

    image for step 1

This ad makes you do a double take thinking, "why would they call their own car a lemon??"

Turns out they go into the rigorous process used to ensure your car is not a lemon, and sell the car that way.

This was a very popular and talked-about ad in 1960.

    #2.) "It isn't so" (1961)

    image for step 2

This was a funny thing some VW Bug owners would do: Make it look like the car was a wind-up toy!

Volkswagen cleverly used this to show off the Beetle's high gas mileage and low cost. This was great "Marketing Judo" which turned around a funny jab at the car into a selling point.

#3.) “Why are the wheels crooked?” (1962)

    image for step 3

This amazing Volkswagen ad has a VERY catchy headline and image that make you want to read the finer copy!

This is a perfect example of catching the readers idea, grabbing their attention, and sending them down the "Slippery Slope" of reading.

#4.) "If You Run Out Of Gas It's Easy To Push" (1962)

    image for step 4

This ad from 1962 shows the insane 32 mile per gallon efficiency of the VW Beetle, and also hilariously shows that if you do run out of gas, it's uniquely small size makes it easy to push.

It also "subtley sells" the car by showing how low maintenance it is, so that the driver might "forget about gas stations" since they visit them so infrequently!

    #5.) "A hole in the roof" (1963)

    image for step 5

This VW Beetle ad harps on the fact the car has barely any expensive options, so for the list price of $1,595 you could get pretty much the entire package....no crazy expensive extra options needed!

    #6.) "Sooner or Later" (1964)

    image for step 6

Oof....this ad will likely not hack it today, but it was meant to display how easily parts on the Volkswagen Beetle were able to be replaced.

#7.) "It makes your house look bigger" (1964)

    image for step 7

This Volkswagen Bug ad from 1964 has a catchy headline, but gets the reader to understand that the smallness of the car is it's major benefit....it uses less gas, lower maintenance bills, barely any upkeep costs.

    #8.) "Interchangeable Parts" (1965)

    image for step 8

This is a 1965 Beetle ad that cleverly demonstrated a Volkswagen Beetle has extremely interchangeable parts.

#9.) "Keeps the Dampness Out" (1967)

    image for step 9

This clever ad talks about how a Volkswagen Beetle can actually FLOAT IN WATER!

It goes on to brag about the tight seals on the car, and how it's nearly airtight so it doesn't get damp or let moisture in.

#10.) "Every new one comes slightly used" (1968)

    image for step 10

This ad shows how each Volkswagen Beetles undergoes 16,000 inspections, is driven 3 miles, and is broken in before delivering to it's new owner.

#11.) "It's ugly but it gets you there" (1969)

    image for step 11

Two weeks after the first lunar excursion modules landed on the Moon, Volkswagen promoted their notoriously "ugly" VW Beetle with this ad.

It's great how much fun Volkswagen poked at themselves!

Hope you enjoyed all these classic VW Beetle ads!

They are amazing pieces of advertising and imagery!

I love old school ads, and these decades-old Range Rover ads do a great job of two main things:

#1.) The Range Rover can handle tough terrain.
#2.) The Range Rover looks good.

For example in this it says "You can drive it as if it were your brother-in-law's" and it shows the RR going over some crazy difficult terrain:

    vinatege-range-rover-ads.jpeg

Not sure why the person who hates this his brother-in-law so much....but we get the point 😂

This next ad promotes the suspension of the Range Rover by comparing them to Nike Air's (which in the 90's were a huge hit).

This ad is good at just showing the product also:

    range-rover-vintage-ad-.jpg

This next Range Rover ad is my favorite. It doesn't even show the product (up close at least).

It just shows the Range Rover going wayyyyy off the beaten path, opting for taking a desert sand drive instead of a comfy highway like all the other cars:

    range-rover-vintage-ad-.jpeg

    Here's a fun weekend project I did:

I added an "Ab and Stretching Area" to my garage gym. Here's a quick tour:

Here's what the garage gym looked like (those are chalkboard walls):

    chalkboard-walls-gym.jpg

I always thought this concrete lip was wasted space, and could be turfed or padded in some way:

    concrete-lip-gym.jpg

My friend Sam was clearing out his garage down the street and had some leftover turf, so I took it:

    terf-roll-nevs-gym.jpg

I cleared off all the stuff on the concrete lip. Unfortunately this means removing the table that held my speakers, lamp, and star projector:

    gym-turf-2.jpg

I laid out the turf and measured it (making sure the grain of the "grass" is all the same direction):

    gym-laying-turf.jpg

Started slicing up the turf, using turf tape to attach the 4 different pieces:

    gym-turf-3.jpg

Then glued all the turf down to the concrete so it doesn't move:

    gym-turf-4.jpg

Then let it sit for a while to settle in:

    gym-turf-5.jpg

Started putting stuff back on it:

    gym-turf-6.jpg

Including these two stool thingies to use for stretching and sitting:

    gym-turf-and-stool.jpg

Downside of this....the speakers had nowhere to go 😳

    gym-speakers-tables.jpg

Luckily this meant I got to do another project! I bought some speaker mounts to hang the speakers:

    turf-wall-mounts.jpg

    Mounting the speakers on studs:

    mounting-speakers-gym.jpg

Got them mounted, but it had this big droopy cable showing:

    speaker-cord-gym.jpg

The next step is to route these speaker and power wires behind the drywall:

    speaker-cords-straight.jpg

Unfortunately these are exterior facing walls with insulation behind them and cross-brace studs....so I'll have to call a professional to hide the cables for me (I checked on YouTube....it's a little above my skill level)!

But anyways, now I have an "Ab and Stretching Area" in the gym!

Sometimes we get hung up on internet advertising as the ONLY way to get the word out to people, but I'm a huge fan of the humble "stick on the back of a car" such as this:

    got-foggy-windows.webp

This is a simple (yet effective) add from Glass Guru on one of their work vans:

    GOT FOGGY WINDOWS?
Guaranteed Repair Saves 50% or More!

This is very straightforward and clear….and if someone has foggy windows they might give them a call….all from a simple stick on the back of a van!

Some of the benefits of vehicle advertising:

    • Potentially thousands of people a day see the ad.
    • If selling a local service you show it to local people.
    • While parked at a location, others can see the ad and reach out (it's how I found my lawn guy).

In fact as online advertising is getting increasingly expensive, offline advertising is getting more love now!

Checkout this billboard AppSumo made in Austin recently:

    app-sumo-billboard.jpg

Not sure if some of you new newsletter subscribers remember this, but 5 years ago I was curious about billboards and got one made for $900!

    • Click "Generate" it comes up with 3 more ideas.
    • Has a text field where you can practice writing.

It's kind of an uncomfortable feeling for many people to view their life in this way. For example, here’s the high-level program of my life:

    30: Slow down

    Podcast Experiment

Hi, my name's Josh Haroldson. As a kid I never liked school all that much. What I really liked was summer vacation. Because that's where you got to work on whatever you wanted. For example:

    • A couple summers I had a lawn service which taught me you could make money on your own by providing a useful service for people. I only bought enough money to buy a snowboard, but now, I'm a top-rated freelancer on Upwork.
    • Another summer I learned to use my camera while backpacking. And a few years later ended up as an Instagram suggested user doing paid work for companies like Vayner Media and Food+Wine.

Dang. Turns out those summer projects can be pretty useful.

So, now that I'm a stay-at-home dad I figured, "Hey, why not bring back the summer project?"

Enter, the podcast. AKA my Copywriting Course Summer Jam.

    What I want to learn:

    • How to launch and edit a podcast.
    • How to regularly create small pieces of re-usable content.
    • How to promote a podcast to my first 1000 downloads.

    My Goal:

    • Have fun and create something I can share with my kid someday.
    • Get to 1,000 downloads. That might not seem like a lot in the social media world, but me talking to a room full of 1,000 people would be pretty neat.

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday June 3rd, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday June 3rd, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

🎤 Listen to this email here:

There's an interesting company called MSCHF (like mischief) that does viral contests.

Look at this cool old-school-looking page for an "MMO-SAT Test" they made:

    MSAT-winner-takes-all.jpg

At first I thought this was like an SAT test contest, but MMO-SAT means Massive Multiplayer Online Standardized Test.

This MSCHF company does "drops" and this particular contest is #70 in a sequence of ~100 they are doing.

They do lots of other contests like this, and release a list of their next "drops "so people can anticipate them:

    contest-date-file.webp

No one has any clue if they make money or not, but this is super interesting company, and really cool how they "manufacture virality" over and over again!

    Thought:

    sleeping.jpg

I used to regularly try to lucid dream (where you "wake up" during a dream and can control it).

People who lucid dream can do ANYTHING THEY WANT in a dream like fly, or meet celebrities, or hangout with dinosaurs.

A few years ago I spent months trying to do this, and could "become conscious" inside a dream with some regularity, but it would only last for up to 20 seconds (I would get so excited that I was inside a lucid dream that I'd knock myself out of it)!

The most reliable method I found to enter a lucid dream:
    #1.)
Look at both hands before you go to bed.

#2.) Then when you're dreaming, look at your hands inside the dream, and you'll "wake up" inside the dream!

    hands-up-dream.jpg

So right before I'd go to bed I'd hold up my hands like this, and then if I was ever in a dream during the night, I'd try to "look at my hands inside the dream" and it would all of sudden pop me into the dream and I could control it!

It's kind of wild this is even a real thing and I've always been fascinated by it!

    Uplifting:

I'm just going to assume you have a strange fixation with Shih Tzu dogs like I do, so here are the 3 best Shih Tzu Instagram accounts to follow:

#1.) Louie the Shih Tzu: @imlouiethetzu

    louie-the-shih-tzu.webp

#2.) Roku the Shih Tzu: @its.me.roku.the.shihtzu

    roku-the-shis-tzu.webp

#3.) Kimbap the Shih Tzu: @kimbap_the_shihtzu

    kimbap-the-shihtzu.webp

If you follow these, I'm pretty sure your life will be happier. LOOK AT THOSE FACES!! 🙂

P.S. These dog accounts tend to have goofy sound effects, so I almost always watch the videos on mute.

P.P.S. I spend way too much time looking at these accounts 😂

    Picture:

If anyone needs a simple plan for the gym, this one-pager is what I use:

    billys-workout.jpg

This is what my friend Billy Murphy used to win a #1 spot in a body building competition despite no previous experience.

Obviously he also had a very clean diet (which is probably more important than the working out part).

I've also scribbled this workout on my home gym wall. It's very helpful on days when I don’t know what to do, so I just pick a number and crank through it!

    garage-workout.jpg

Maybe keep that photo in your phone, and if you ever need a workout to follow, just do one of those 🙂

    Interesting:

One thing we do at Copywriting Course is run a community where we practice writing and re-write each others copy.

    working-together.png

Here's the stats from from last month (May 2022):
    • 37 videos added
    • 1,610 posts written
    • 2,705 likes given
    • 229,312 words written
    • 1,498,233 characters written
     See live feed

I'm very proud of a lot of "wins" we constantly get (see a live updated list of wins), such as:

“Implemented your suggestion for the headline and it worked! It had a CTR jump from 11% to 24%.” MH

“3 leads came in today after applying what I learned from your feedback.” LB

“Got advice on Office Hours, implemented it, immediately got 9x engagement on LinkedIn posts” CO

“I count on you guys to double check every piece of copy I send out. Your critiques are always spot on. You never disappoint.” LW

“Open rates on my newsletter are about 70% among my active subscribers! I couldn't have done it without your feedback and support!” KR

If you're looking for help on any of your copy, right now (mid-2022) might be a great time to start.

We're halfway through the year, so this is the time to optimize all your emails, webpages, product pages, and offerings for Q4:

My family lived out the American Dream and it’s pretty awesome 🙂

    I feel very grateful for:
    • The opportunity to work
    • The opportunity to express
    • The opportunity to participate
    • The opportunity to be a value add

I'm also grateful for you reading this email. Thank you 😊

How to Hit 100 Posts Inside Copywriting Course

One of the best ways to become a better writer.....is to write a lot!

    typing-image.gif

So I challenge you to hit 100 posts inside the Copywriting Course Members Area

We've seen people who post 100+ posts get drastically better at writing, more confident at writing, and are able to craft clearer messaging on everything they create.

Here's some ways you can quickly hit 100+ posts!

[Go] Copy Assignments: Get some copy practice.
[Go] Make a work journal: You can see mine here.
[Go] Answer Q&A questions: Answer these simple questions.
[Go] Comment on blog posts: Only members can comment on posts.
[Go] Submit your copy for review: Get copy reviewed and optimized.
[Go] Give feedback on other members copy: Give honest feedback.

    Do "Copy Assignments"

For example, we challenge you to "sell this boat."

    sell-this-boat-animation-white.gif

We'll give you a few details about the boat, then you can write a cold email to sell the boat, and our professional writers inside the forum will review it and let you know how to improve!

    Write a daily work journal

This is a great bang-for-your-buck, because you get writing practice AND have some work accountability!

For example I posted a small update in my Daily Work Journal showing where I am writing this post from:

    writing-day.webp

Or here's another post outlining my daily to-do:

    do-list.jpg

The simple act of sorting out your tasks, writing them down, then sharing them with a likeminded private community is EXTREMELY helpful.

You also get other people commenting on your work sometimes with suggestions, or even reaching out saying they are working on something similar and giving tips!

    Answer Q&A questions

We ask some simple questions you can easily answer.

    question-thinking-no-water-mark.gif

Taking a quick second to answer a few of these, and it will naturally get you to think about an answer, craft a message, and share it (all while secretly making you a better writer)!

    Leave comments on blog posts

We've got a blog that gets many hundreds of thousands visits a month, and only members can comment on it.

If you hit 50 posts in the forum you get to display you social links, so this often results in some cool exposure!

    member-social-links.webp

From these social links alone people have got more exposure, increased their following, and even got hired for gigs and positions!

You never know who might see these, so go comment and participate on the blog!

    Submit your copy for review

One of the most popular features inside Copywriting Course is posting your copy, and our professional writers go through and make it better with you.

This way you get realtime feedback on your writing, spot improvements, and learn-by-doing.

    submit-copy.jpg

What's even cooler is you rack up post counts for getting copy reviewed and interacting with the community inside your thread.

Give feedback on other members copy

You don't have to be an expert writer to give feedback on someone's copy. In fact you can just share what you think is right/wrong about a piece, and give suggestions on what you thought about it.

    thinking-page-300x194.jpg

This is SUPER USEFUL to the person asking for feedback, because it's great to hear from different perspectives

    Your Goal:

    ✏️ Make 100 Posts ✏️

[Go] Give feedback on other members copy
[Go] Submit your copy for review
    [Go] Comment on blog posts
    [Go] Answer Q&A questions
    [Go] Make a work journal
    [Go] Copy Assignments

    Sincerely,
    Copywriting Course

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday May 27th, 2022)

The famous old-school copywriter Gary Halbert made his first million dollars at age 32 with a promotion called: The Coat of Arms Letter.

This was the one-page letter to specific last names in the phonebook where he would sell "Coat of Arms" family crest you could buy through the mail (this was 1971 and that was the only way to buy):

    halbert-letter.jpg

The product people received was literally a printed family crest.

This was an example of the front & back of the Coat of Arms you would get:

Shoutout to @eston_esau who sent me these pictures of his grandpa's framed Coat of Arms!

    Thought:

Some types of media take longer per minute to make than others.

    For example:

Production Time -vs- Final Product ratio:
    • MOVIE: 12 months for 2 hours (4,300:1)
    • SONG: 100 hours for 3 minutes (2,000:1)
    • PODCAST: 2 hours for 1 hour (2:1)
    • LIVE VIDEO: 1 hour for 1 hour (1:1)

This weekend we did a fun Spartan Race with some friends and it was a great time!

    I'm MAINLY just happy I didn't hurt myself! 😬

It was 10k of running with 25 obstacles and challenges in between.

We rented a nice house near the lake where the race was being held:

The race begins! Carrying a bucket fill of rocks

    nev-bars.webp

There were lots of monkey-bar-type hanging obstacles

My friend Noah Kagan running through mud

    end-of-race.jpg

    We all completed the race!

    swimming-spartan.jpg

Jumped in the lake to clean off

    hammak.jpg

Enjoyed the rest of the weekend hanging with friends

It was a good time, good friends, and we made a full weekend out of it on the lake 🙂

    Picture:

On my iPhone always use a few unknown settings to make better pics.

These 5 iOS photo modifiers make your pictures look WAY better (and doesn't wash out the photo)!

On almost any photo you take, apply these:
    • Increase "Brilliance"
    • Increase "Shadows"
    • Increase "Vibrance"
    • Increase "Definition"
    • Straighten & Crop

    Here's an example:

    photo-editing-sid.jpg

Here's an example of a photo ruined by lots of backlight, and simply increasing the exposure just washes out the picture, but if you do those 5 modifiers the photo becomes great:

    edit-photo-2.jpg

This photo was almost unusable, but 20 seconds of:
    • Increase "Brilliance"
    • Increase "Shadows"
    • Increase "Vibrance"
    • Increase "Definition"
    • Straighten & Crop

    ...and we're in business!

    canoe.jpg

Toggling these 5 settings is often the difference between a "meh" photo and an awesome photo. The magic is in the post-editing!

    Interesting:

A Copywriting Course member wanted to build an email list for sneaker deals:

    redit-full-page.jpg

↳ Progress for emails was slow, so he started his own sub-Reddit instead!
↳ 3,000 subs first month! 200,000 views. 2 viral hits.
↳ He tried a promotion but it failed.
↳ Then he made a Top 10 post, it hit and brought in revenue!

    best-sneaker-post.jpg

↳ The sub-Reddit is now 6,100 members in about ~2.5 months!
↳ He's been turning those members into email subs (currently 140+)
↳ Is now releasing a paid database of sneaker deals to them.

    sales-analytics-steve.jpg

Kind of neat how email collection was going slow, but starting a Sub-Reddit was an immediate hit!

Here's a cool little artifact from the 1990's:

A Simpsons drawing guide that Matt Groening created for the animators:

    simpsons-drawing-1.jpg

He had these pages that would guide the writers to create a consistent product like he liked:

    lisa-simpson-animations.jpg

This is pretty common in the animation world.

For example this is "Mickey Mouse's Hand Guides" from Walt Disney:

    mickey-mouse-hands.jpg

Cool to see these behind-the-scenes guides 🙂

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday May 20th, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday May 20th, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

🎤 Listen to this email here:

    Swipe:

This is a cool chart sent along with a toaster that visually shows the different heat settings.

The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 don’t really mean much to the user, but showing them like this instantly conveys what each setting does!

    toaster-heat-setting-levels-1432x2048.jpg

This is an example of simple and effective copy visuals!

    Thought:

Movie posters are basically one-pager advertisements, however they often contain NOTHING but the title of the movie and an image.

For example this Spider-Man movie poster just says "Spider-Man" and some action shots of the main characters:

    spider-man.jpg

They can get away with this because everyone already knows what Spider-Man is! All they have to do is show the new movie is coming out, and an audience will follow.

Another sequence of posters that needs very little explanation or words is James Bond.

The franchise is so popular that just showing a sparse poster is enough, like this Golden Eye poster:

    007-movie-poster.jpg

...or this Spectre poster with nothing but a cool picture of James Bond:

    spectre-007.jpg

Now some movie posters need to add more context to the poster because the general public may not know much about the character, like this awesome Kamen Rider poster.

Notice the extra story text on the left and right:

    movie-poster-2.jpg

Or when Scarface came out it's poster had additional context explaining the story because no one knew this character:

    scarface-movie-poster.jpg

    Uplifting:

One of the absolute simplest time-saving tricks I’ve seen bars do in recent years is:

“We’ll keep your tab open but give your credit card back right away.”

When they do this you can just leave, and at the end of night they’ll close your tab and do an automatic 20% tip.

Customers love this because they can leave anytime without spending 10 minutes trying to close a tab.

Bartenders love this because they get 20% gratuity on every check.

Bars love this because bartenders are filling drink orders, not settling tabs.

This is such a small change, but yields big results!

    Picture:

Totally random, but these are the 5 different light settings my home office scrolls through depending on my mood:

    office-hue.gif

It's all controlled through a Phillips Hue remote, with 4 Phillips Hue Play lights, 2 Phillips Hue color bulbs inside lamps, and 4 LED lamps for some extra lighting power when on calls.

It all looks like this in the day:

    office-daytime.jpg

...and looks like this at night:

    office-night-time.webp

    Interesting:

I couldn't believe this actually works! Notice the difference in reading speed on the below text:

Text on left: Normal text. Text on right:Bionic Reading” text with specifically bolded letters.

Watch how fast you can read the text on the right with the bolded letters!

    bionic-reading.webp

It's kind of wild how much faster you can read the right side with these specifically bolded letters!

    Drawing:

I've utilized drawing little stick figures and such for years, and it's always been difficult....but over the year's it's become easier.

My original drawings were done on tablet computers or an iPad Pro and then edited in Photoshop:

    thinking.webp

Then for a while I used a Google Presentation file with different body parts of StickGuy (heads, eyes, noses, mouths, bodies)....so I could just drag-n-drop them into different permutations like this:

    presentation-gif.gif

Then I was using Canva a lot, and you can draw + add images:

    canva-drawing.webp

Or you could use Canva pre-existing templated stuff:

    canva-template.webp

Now I'll often edit and create images directly within ConvertKit (what I'm using to send this email):

    convertkit-image.webp

Making images used to be this very skilled thing few people could do, but now it's become so much more accessible with better tools!

6 things I *really really* like about ConvertKit

    Listen to this on Podcast:

I've tried every email sending company out there for my own businesses or for clients.....and I'm going to show you my #1 pick of them all.

    I've personally used:
    GetResponse
    Aweber (7 years)
    Klaviyo (7 years)
    MailChimp (3 years)
    InfusionSoft (5 years)
    ConvertKit (currently)

Here's what I personally have found from going through all these services:

The big features aren't important as the little features.

The big stuff is almost all the same. Sending broadcasts, autoresponders, tagging. Every email service has this.

However it's the little things are important: How the editor works, editing images, being able to capture emails easily etc....

Here's the top things I've enjoyed about ConvertKit.

#1.) Easily write in the editor

This is such a big problem with most companies. The editor is often clunky and frustrating to write in.

In ConvertKit you write, and that's what it puts out.

    email-blast.gif

Especially as an email gets longer, some email editors will "blow up" and mess up your email like an old Microsoft Word doc.

I used to always write blog posts on my website, then transfer them to emails. For almost a year now I've used ConvertKit as my default blog writing software.

One of the main reasons is the next point....

#2.) Edit Images on the spot.

Doing small edits to images is one of the most time consuming things I do (and for people who aren't good at this, often impossible).

For example, here's an image of an old advertisement I used in an email:

    kellogs-pop-tart-ad.jpg

But I want to make it more informative by marking up the image...

With ConvertKit directly from the email editor I can do this:

    pop-tart-ad-with-callout.jpg

This normally used to take many steps of importing/exporting the photo from Photoshop or another program like Canva. With ConvertKit I never left my email editor!

#3.) Autoresponder just click through and edit.

In the past my autoresponders looked like this:

    auto-responder-all.webp

While this LOOKS COOL, IT'S COMPLICATED AND HARD TO MANAGE.

Let's zoom in and look at this:

    auto-responder-zoomed-in.webp

To make an autoresponder I would have to:

    • Create and apply tagging rules
    • Create a timer & rules for each individual email
    • Link each email to the next
    • Open new windows to edit an email
    • Layout the emails so they fit on the screen
    • View individual reports for each email

This was an utter disaster, and made wrangling my autoresponders super difficult.

ConvertKit solved this by making a brain-dead-simple layout like this:

    auto-responder-setup.webp

Just click the email you want to edit....and edit right there on the spot.

I also HATED the reporting on other autoresponders. You had to click through each email one-by-one....but autoresponders are meant to be viewed as a sequence, not individually.

That's why when I saw ConvertKit displays simple reporting like this I rejoiced:

    autoresponder-reports.webp

These might be very simple things, but to anyone who's living is made with emails, these things are huge deals.

I DON'T KNOW WHY IT TOOK SOMEONE THIS LONG TO MAKE AUTORESPONDERS LIKE THIS 😂

    #4.) Accept purchases for products

I do consulting and sometimes accept random payments for sponsorships. Instead of invoicing software, I'll just create a product in ConvertKit, add the price, and send that link to the client, like this:

    invoice-for-sponsorship.webp

    BAM. I just accepted payments.

It's little things like this that SHOULD be simple that I like.

#5.) Capture emails and grow list

Ugh, another bane of my existence is having multiple services to do email collection and email sending. Why are they not the same?

With ConvertKit I put this simple email signup form on CopywritingCourse.com/newsletter

    newsletter-signup-page.webp

In the past few weeks here's the performance of that box:

    newsletter-signup-stats.webp

This means ~15% of the people that landed on that link entered their email address, and I picked up ~1,200 new subscribers from that.

Since I use ConvertKit for email collection AND sending, I set this form to start new signups on the autoresponder I mentioned above.

#6.) Send content upgrades in one

Sending a "Content Upgrade" is when someone signups for your email, and you send them a file:

    send-file.webp

This feature was nearly impossible with InfusionSoft, and required 10+ clicks and settings.

In fact I had to use LeadPages to handle this functionality.

However ConvertKit just let's you push people to a different page after they signup, or send them a message via email with the link:

    convertkit-file-for-email.webp

Once again, this seems like such a small thing, but in practice is so difficult with many email services. So now I could send people relevant content downloads extremely simply, which massively boosted conversion rates!

    product-pricing-calculator-download.webp

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post on the primary features that make me love ConvertKit.

    Sincerely,
    Neville Medhora

P.S. I made this whole email inside ConvertKit, including all the images.

    Thought:

I've written 5,000+ blog posts and emails reaching hundreds of millions of people.

This is the messy process of creation they all follow:

STEP #1.) Have tons of random and disorganized thoughts.

These thoughts & ideas come to you in the shower, on walks, or randomly...

    disorganized-writing-thoughts.gif

STEP #2.) Put all those thoughts into disorganized writing.

Just get all those thoughts into writing in one place.

This could be in a Google Doc, a note in your phone, a Wordpress post, or wherever you write.

It doesn't have to be organized (or make sense) yet...

    disorganized-on-doc.gif

STEP #3.) Edit, Organize, & Trim.

This is where you'll start putting your disorganized writing into a coherent structure.

60% of the time the article changes it's focus at this stage...

    editing-a-doc.gif

STEP #4.) Start making your article clean & clear.

Re-read your article, and RUTHLESSLY cut out sentences that "don't earn their pixels."

At this point your article is ready.

    good-writing-fast-and-fun.gif

HINT: You'll still NEVER be 100% satisfied with the final product...so 90% happiness on an article is great 🙂

    Uplifting:

I originally started using Instagram as a place to post my daily to-do lists all scratched off, like this:

    to-do-lists.PNG

The problem is my friends didn't wanna see these everyday, especially since the stuff was already crossed off.

In order to share my daily to-do lists I recently created a "Journal" feature in our members area:

    journal-tab.jpg

Any member can click that tab, and it'll automatically add to a running journal log.

For example I always create my to-do lists the night before, and I snapped a pic and shared it:

    nev-journal-post.jpg

It's kind of neat keeping a running work journal because you are forced to write out what you're doing, other members can see it, and people often leave feedback or give you ideas.

It's so cool the internet allows you to work in a community like this 🙂

    Picture:

Whenever my friends (and 4-door-down neighbors) @thesamparr and @SaraSodineParr go out of town I get a free guard dog named Sid 🙂

    Here's Sid playing the guitar:

Here's Sid watching podcasts with me:

Here's Sid lazying in the office:

Here's Sid guarding the gym while I workout:

Here's Sid chameleon-ing into the office rug 😂

    Interesting:

One of the obvious technologies that will appear in our lifetime is Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.

Right now we use tiny phone screens to view our information, but if you had glasses which can display pixels, your screen can be ANY size you want!

    ar-glasses.jpg

If you acquired a pair of AR glasses from 5 years in the future, you would essentially be a superhuman:

You'd be able to listen to conversations, transcribe, and reply using GPT-3. People could ask you questions, and you read what pops up on your AR glasses.

It would appear like you are answering any question instantly.

    Ar-day-time-glasses.jpg

You would instantly know pertinent information at all times:

    AR-weather-glasses.jpg

Imagine doing a standup comedy set with these glasses on. Instead of having to remember jokes, you could literally read them without anyone knowing:

    ar-information-glasses.jpg

This technology is still early, and I imagine it'll be like smartphones in the last 20 years: They are initially useful-but-limited devices, but in 10+ years their usefulness will massively increase.

    Drawing:

Speaking of to-do lists from earlier in the email, here's the format I use for my hand-drawn to-do lists:

    to-do-list-feb-21.jpg

I've been using this method for YEARS....in fact here's a video from 2012 showing the exact same method I've been using!

Experiment: I’m creating a Sub-Reddit Community to promote Sneaker Deals (Have 5,000 now)

Hi my name is Steve. I’m a bit of a sneakerhead, and I wanted to build out an email list of people to send sneaker deals I find. Why not try to make money doing something I love & know alot about.

I tried a couple of different platforms to build an audience first (Instagram, Twitter), but the one that caught the most steam is my own Sub-Reddit.

So far I’ve been adding between 100 and 300 new subscribers per day.

    • What’s inside of them
    • How they are packaged
    • That they go in the toaster
    • The different flavors of Pop-Tarts
    • Dimensions of the Pop Tarts (hand for scale)

Sometimes it's easier to just "Show" a product rather than describe it.

This ad from Miro just "shows" a team building out a communication workflow with a simple gif, and it helps explain the product much better than tons of text!

    miro.gif

Taking this concept even further, did you know on Amazon's phone app you can see an augmented reality view of what a product will look like in your home?

Here I typed in "Shelf", found a product, clicked "View In Your Room" and through the camera I can see exactly what it would look like in real life.

    shelf-vr.webp

Instead of describing what this shelf is like, Amazon took it a step further and lets you SEE THE THING IN YOUR OWN HOME!

    Uplifting:

I pay $600/month to have a guy from MyBodyTutor call me everyday at 10:15am and ask:

    • What I ate (which I log throughout day).
    • When I’m going to workout.
    • What I'm going to do during that workout.
    • What I’m going to eat today.

It’s been incredibly transformative on my eating habits.

For 2 years I was trying to hit a certain fitness goal and just "keeeppptt" missing it. The daily accountability this provides (also the fact I'm shelling out a good bit of money) keeps me on track.

I've never had a problem consistently working out....but pigging out on junk has always been a problem.

I've started cooking myself a lot more, and it's been super interesting to see how healthy you can make a meal (and learning what's in it vs never knowing with purchased meals).

Here's examples of meals I make now:

    beets-advocatos-green.jpg

    Beets, Avocado, Green Beans

    steak-tomato.jpg

    Steak, Tomato, Spinach, Goat Cheese

    beets-tomato.jpg

    Beets, Tomato, Spinach, Goat Cheese

    chicken-legs-green-beans.jpg

Chicken Legs, Green Beans, Whiskey Cocktail

    chicken-tomatos-.jpg

    Chicken, Spinach, Tomato

    chicken-goat-cheese.jpg

Chicken, Goat Cheese, Tomato, Beets, Spinach

    sushi.jpg

Sushi if I'm feeling crazy! Salon, Avocado, Rice, Seaweed Wrap

Making healthier meals like this has actually been pretty simple (having a grill outside is a game changer), and the food is super delicious still!

    Picture:

In my experience Twitter is the fastest “Online —> IRL” friend making platform out there.

This is me and @RohunJauhar from DM to hanging out in 48 hours:

    twitter-friend.jpg

I've met a ton of friends through Twitter in the last year....and it kind of reminds me of the early days of blogging when you'd read people's blogs, somehow communicate, then meetup when traveling to their city or at a conference.

    Interesting:

Speaking of Twitter....there's so many social networks, which one do you focus on??

    focus-social.gif

In this recent post I reported on the 3 questions to ask which help you decide where to focus your energy:

#1.) What channels do I have a natural advantage?
#2.) Will I enjoy spending 1-3 years of time on this platform?
#3.) What main channel helps me create "cascading content"?

Ultimately it's best when you create one type of content that "cascades" into many types of content.

    For me, it's like this:
Blog Post ⇨ YouTube Script ⇨ Social Media Posts (Twitter and LinkedIn)

This means if I write one blog posts, it creates a nice SEO asset that then allows me to easily make other content:

    blog-video.jpg

    Drawing:

I love the shortening of information. You get to pick-and-chose your desired level of depth and mastery.

For example if you want to learn to cook an egg, you can choose your desired "depth" of knowledge:
    • 30 seconds: TikTok
    • 15 minutes: YouTube
    • 1 hour: YouTube
    • 2 hours: Book
    • 6 hours: Course
    • 100 hours: School

However this illustration by Janis Ozolins shows it's actually KIND OF HARD to make short content!

    writing-time.jpg

I always thought making catching Instagram Reels or TikTok videos was easy, but often they have as much editing as a long video.

Hope you enjoyed these little tidbits, have a happy Friday!

Tone of Voice in Copywriting & Your Brand (w/ Examples)

    what-tone-of-voice.png

In copywriting it’s super helpful to first find the tone of your voice.

    Why?

    • If you do it right, people will WANT to read your stuff.
    • Everyone who interacts with your writing will react to it’s style. (or worse…NOT react).
    • You have to write like this all day, so it’s best to at least enjoy doing it!

The good part is, you don’t have to stick with one tone of voice forever.

There are MANY different tone’s of voice you can use in your writing.

    I don’t care if you run a small blog…..
    I don’t care if you own a dental practice…..
    I don’t care if you are a Fortune 500 Company salesperson…..

The tone you use in your writing is interchangeable for different situations.

Take my hand ::eww don’t really touch my hand:: and let’s look at some tone of voice examples together:

    saas-logo.png

Omg…..if you’re a SaaS company (Software As A Service), you often have the easiest job of all. Because all you have to do is SHOW YOUR PRODUCT WORKING!!!

Member Mouse does a fantastic job on their landing page just SHOWING with video the product works:

    member-mouse-1.jpg

Why bother with tons of text when you can just SHOW something in a quick screen-capture video?

Another thing they do well is list a bunch of features:

    member-mouse-2.jpg

Most of the people coming to Member Mouse ALREADY KNOW they are shopping for a membership website plugin…..so they don’t need to extensively explain each feature.

And they actually have videos in the support section showing the features in action, so there’s not much need to use tons of text here.

As you’ll notice, they had to have very little “Tone” because people aren’t coming to this site for the “TONE”…..they’re coming for a working piece of SOFTWARE.

Just show the damn thing in action!

    Also what works well……GIF’s.

Here’s an example from Gif Cam that shows how easy it is to add text on their software:

    member-mouse-gif.gif

Why bother WRITING about how great it is….when you can just SHOW it?

The “SaaS Company” Tone of Voice:

    • Calm and cool.
    • List lots of  benefits.
    • Show the product in action.

    super-vulnerable-voice.png

The “Super Vulnerable” Tone is best deployed for a story that actually feels difficult or “vulnerable” to share.

For example, in this Prey Project copy from AppSumo I wrote years ago…..

    prey-copy.jpg

It was the first time we’d used “vulnerable” copy on AppSumo and it worked spectacularly.

I had actually been robbed a few months before…..and the feeling was extremely violating.  I would literally fantasize about what I would do to the bastards that robbed me if I found them.

…..now that’s kind of messed up thinking right?

Well I knew I couldn’t be the only one that felt like this.  And to my surprise, I got a bomb-explosion of emails in my inbox that day about that email.  Even from people who are already great copywriters:
    copy-reply.jpg

Like I said in the beginning of this article, you can use all these different styles at different times.

For that particular deal, telling a hard-hitting-emotional story was the best way I could get people to use Prey.

The “Super Vulnerable” Tone of Voice:

    • Emotional and heartfelt.
    • The reader should feel your pain.
    • It should be slightly uncomfortable to publish.

    just-steal-it.png

Want to find out the kinds of tone your industry likes??  JUST STEAL IT!!!

It’s super easy to figure out what kind of tone gets the broadest range of people:

    1. Just go to Amazon.com/books and enter your industry or keyword.
    2. Sort by “Most Relevant”.
    3. Either buy the top 10 books and read them.  Or read the free previews.  Or read the top comments on the books.

You’ll very quickly get a sense of how people are writing in this industry!

Now…..this “Steal It” method is dangerous, because generally people who just try to copy everyone else without any uniqueness tend to fade into the background.  However, it can give you some seriously-amazing insight into the broad mindset of your audience.

    Here’s some examples:

Let’s say you wanna figure out what your Tone of Voice should be for a dog training website.

Well, just follow 3 steps above….

Here’s the results for the Top 10 “Dog Training” books on Amazon:

    dog-training-amazon.jpg

Notice just from their covers and titles everything is “Happy” and “Natural” and “Friendly” and “Best Friendy.”

So naturally we can see people like this “Friendly and Happy” tone of voice.

So if I came in with a crazy book title and tone…..while it could POSSIBLY draw a lot of attention, it doesn’t seem like the type of book that most people are actually paying money for.

So I wouldn’t hit the dog training market with a CRAZY AND WILD title like this:

    dog-training-book.png

That title isn’t very consistent with what the paying public is buying.

Now let’s do another “Steal It” experiment….this time on:  Stock Analysis

What should the tone be if we want to write about Stock Analysis?

Well here’s the top 10 books on Amazon:
    stock-books-amazon.jpg

Notice the covers and titles are pretty serious.

There’s a lot of language like “security analysis” and “guide to financial markets” and “technical analysis” talk.  You don’t see a bunch of wacky or super-casual style copy in these best sellers eh?

So if we wanted to write a Stock Analysis site, it seems the best respected books are more serious.  This means I WOULD NOT write super goofy and wacky like this:

    stock-market-books.png

As hilarious as this might be (and who knows, it might even work!)……we can ascertain from looking at all the top sellers that the tone of voice for this Stock Analysis niche is going to be more “professional.

This is likely a function of:

    • The people in the industry are relatively professional.
    • The people who write these kind of books are quite professional.
    • The people buying these books want to learn from a “professional” source.

So if I were to write “Stock Analysis” articles, I would adopt the tone of the most popular material.  That doesn’t mean I’d strip out all personality, it just means I probably would want to avoid looking crazy and goofy.

    b2b-tone.png

The B2B Copywriting Tone of Voice is the most confusing for people.  Most people in the B2B (Business To Business) sales industry think they have to be SUPER FORMAL which in their mind means “boring”….but it’s not totally true.

    • You don’t have to act formal, you jut have to be “Professional-Yet-Human-Sounding.”
    • Just write like you talk in the office or in a sales meeting.
    • Don’t sound like a robot because you think it’s “more professional.”  This hurts the chances of your email being read.
    • Do NOT “just pitch them.”  You need to offer some value to the other person.

When I tell people these rules for B2B emails, they always end up saying this:
    forma-writing.png

    No.  They.  Do Not.

No one wants to read boring-ass emails!!  Especially when they get 100+ of them everyday!

    They want emails that either:

    • Show them something awesome.
    • –or–
    • Show them something that can make their lives better/easier.

Let’s look at an example.  Checkout these B2B email copywriting templates from Yelp:

Here’s a sample of a “Boring Formal B2B” email they would send to businesses:

Yelp Template B2B Email Results (Boring Formal Sounding):
    yep-template.png

Here are the results from this “Boring Formal” email:
    50 Sent
    33 Opened
    1 Response
    3.33% response rate 😞

This email is too boring and formal, and business owners get requests like this emails by the hundreds.

The important thing is to either be REALLY HELPFUL, or STAND OUT to get people’s attention.  Even a little personality can go an extremely long way.

Yelp “Personality Injected” B2B Email Results (Professional Yet Human Sounding):
    yelp-email-1.png

Notice how this email is still professional, yet speaks like a HUMAN, not a boring robot.  It also offers the person some real VALUE.  Not just a sales pitch.

Here are the result of this “Professional-Yet-Human-Sounding” email:
    50 Sent
    35 Opened
    4 Responses back
    11.43 % response rate 🙂

    So……what do you think now?

Imagine sending 1,000 emails over the course of a month.  At the response rates above, you would get:

    • Boring Formal Email: 33 responses.
    • Professional-Yet-Human-Sounding Email: 114 responses!

For the same amount of work Alicia is now getting more than 3x the responses by using a “Professional-Yet-Human-Sounding” tone of voice.

Maybe try to inject just a little value and a little personality into your B2B emails.  It can make a huge improvement.

The “B2B Company” Tone of Voice:

    • Informative and helpful.
    • Write words like you talk.
    • Try not to sound so formal that you turn into a Boring Robot.

    robot.png

    the-fat-sumo-voice.png

The Fatass Sumo Tone is a tone of voice I developed when we were in the big growth phase of AppSumo and I was writing all the copy.  Here he is:

    appsumo-logo.jpg

Since there was already this great Sumo logo, I decided to give him a personality.  And since he is fictitious, I felt like I could get away with waaaayyyy more that I usually could.

So the Fatass Sumo character is like this:

    • He’s brash.
    • He’s super fat (512 lbs ….because “512” is the Austin area code)
    • He’s kinda sexist sometimes.
    • He’s kinda racist sometimes.
    • He eats a lot.
    • He “kidnaps” people to convince them to give a better deal to the “Sumo-lings”.
    • Here’s some (super old) examples of “The Fatass Sumo Tone”:  Kernest, Hiring,  Sumo Business Blueprint,  Blueprint 2

This made for some HILARIOUS pieces of copy that would get away with crazy amounts of Asian jokes, fat jokes, “you throw like a woman” jokes.

I could also make totally outrageous selling points that other wise wouldn’t fly like:

“I currently have Drew Houston of Dropbox tied up in the trunk of my car…..and won’t let him out till he gives the Sumo-lings 85% off a year subscription to DropBox.”

“This Fatass Sumo needs to get my daily 40 burritos for lunch, so I need money fast.  That’s why I’m willing to let this deal go for only $29/piece.”

Were these kind lines stupid?  Probably.

But did a certain percentage of people pay attention and buy? YES!

The “Fatass Sumo” Tone of Voice:

    • Adopt the persona of the character.
    • You get extra leeway to be “crazier” with this tone.
    • First keep the emails informational, then you can insert some humor.

    write-like-you-act.png

Are you super funny?   Then write funny!  Other funny people will like it!

Are you boring as hell??  Then write boring!  Other boring people will like it!

Hi.  I’m Neville.  I’m sort of cheesy.  I’m kinda informal.  And that’s totally ok.

    • Look at my drawings on my What Is Copywriting page, they’re cheesy.
    • Look at my style of writing throughout this blog, or my videos, or my personal blog.
    • Scroll to the bottom of this blog post, even my “All Rights Reserved” is kinda cheesy.

I’m cheesy and so that’s how I should try to write my personal content.

It’s the unique thing my writing brings to this industry.

The biggest mistake in copywriting is trying to write for the middle of the road.

Think about how these people got famous:

    • Howard Stern.
    • Rush Limbaugh.
    • Kanye West.
    • Donald Trump.
    • Marilyn Manson.
    • Dr. Dre.
    • Paris Hilton.

They are all polarizing. Kind of like Kim Kardashian:

    kim-kardashian.png

There will be a certain group of people who hate her.

There will be a certain group of people who love her.

People like this make you agree, or vehemently disagree.  The thing about them is:

    They keep the crowd awake.

So don’t try to be so middle-of-the-road just because one weirdo says he doesn’t like your writing style.

The “Write Like You Act” Tone of Voice:

    • Writing like YOU is the easiest person to write as.
    • Sometime’s you’re sad.  So write in a sad tone.
    • Sometime’s you’re happy.  So write in a happy tone.
    • Sometime’s you’re angry about a subject.  So write in an angry tone.
    • Being YOU is easy.

    perfered-tone.png

You see, I think I’m hilarious.  I know it’s not true as I’d like it to be…..but it’s what I go for.  In the end, writing like MYSELF is the easiest thing in the world to do.

But since I can remember, I’ve enjoyed reading stuff that’s informative yet has a “unique flair” to it.  Gary Halbert or Felix Dennis are both examples who have hilariously funny copy, yet backed with super-informative material.

It’s almost like this combination of “informative and funny” is the best of both worlds:

    • Laughter
    • &
    • Learning

So this is the type of copy I prefer to write.  Other people who like Informative-Yet-Kinda-Funny articles will like me. People who are staunchy and not funny…..won’t.

“Ok Neville, I have a super boring life AND boring writing….am I doomed to failure??”

You’re at a disadvantage for sure.  If you’re not very interesting or have new ideas, it’s hard to get a large audience to follow you.

BUT…..you can (possibly) make up for it in other ways like this:

    Having really insider information:

    • No one thinks Ben Bernanke is a wild-n-crazy guy…..but when he sets the interest rates that govern all the worlds banks……that makes him REALLY interesting and important to listen to.

Being damn good with math and numbers and analyzing the results:

    • I follow this guy Max Roser on Twitter.  It’s not because he’s “such a hoot” to follow……but he creates graphs from data he scrapes, and the results are SUPER interesting, often times I’ve never seen that information presented anywhere but his graphs.

    Doing unbelievable work:

    • You may be dry writer on your graphics design website, but if you’re work is just STUNNING then people will pay attention to that.

Don’t shy away from your boringness:

    • If you have a boring tone…..then other boring people may enjoy your boring tone!  It’s best to write like yourself, and not try to be someone else.  It nearly always comes through as phony.

    caveman-test.png

My favorite test when reading copy is “The Caveman Test.”

It’s basically where you use a Caveman voice to determine if something sucks or not.

You act and talk like a dumb caveman, and instantly things become clearer.  Like with this boring copy on the left, and the caveman’s instant reaction:

    caveman-voice.jpg

If The Caveman reads a sentence and don’t INSTANTLY know what it means……You have failed.

This is a deviously simple-yet-effective way to tell if your copy is boring people, or keeping them glued to the page.

    The Caveman Test:

    • Pretend you’re a dumb and short-attention-span caveman.
    • Start reading the copy and if it loses your attention, the copy sucks.
    • Re-write or totally remove sentences/paragraphs that lose your attention.

Some quick tips to find your own Copywriting Tone of Voice:

    • Stay caffeinated.  That always puts your brain in a playful mood.
    • Make sure you’re not tired or grumpy when writing (unless that’s the tone you’re going for).
    • Have a SINGLE purpose of the copy.  (example: Get them to click the buy button).
    • Use some of the “angles” from the Problem Solving Checklist to re-look at your copy.
    • Signup to my newsletter to get more tips directly to your inbox.

Hope your learned something about the Tone of Voice to use in your copywriting today.

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday April 29th, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday April 29th, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

🎤 Listen to this email here:

    Swipe:

I saw this image from AirSign used in an Instagram advertisement, and it immediately felt familiar:

    Airsign-ad.jpg

It felt very much like this 1978 Susan Wood photo from New York Magazine I had posted about a few months ago:

    susan-wood-photo.jpg

    Don't they look kinda similar??

    air-sign-ads.jpg

I reached out to the company to see if this was indeed their inspiration for the ad:

    reach-out-to-airsign.jpg

    This was their reply:

    airsign-reply.jpg

So this ad wasn't the direct inspiration but it's neat to see a similar style being revitalized 🙂

    Thought:

Does anyone else feel like a philanthropist whenever you click the organic result on Google instead of making the company pay for your click 😂

    google-results.jpg

Slightly scrolling down to click the organic result could save a company $2 to $40 per click 😬

Companies are often FORCED to bid on their own brand keywords because Google kiiinnnd of extorts companies into doing this.

For example if I Google "Ahrefs" you'll notice their competitor "SemRush" comes up as an ad before Ahref's own organic result:

    ahrefs-results.jpg

Because of this companies have to bid higher and higher for their own top spot.

    Uplifting:

The Lord has answered my prayers after 10 years:

Google Docs "Pageless" format for a continuous document with no page breaks 🙏

On your Google Doc: File → Page Setup → Click "Pageless"

    page-set-up.jpg

Thank you Jesus, Allah, Buddah, Zarathustra, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster for finally answering this prayer!

    I've been waiting so long.

Documents with tables would always get messed up like this, with that little line caused by a page break:

    tables.jpg

    Picture:

I get more done in 2 hours of co-working than 8 hours of working alone.

For example had some buddies over co-working the other day:

    co-working.jpg

In fact as I'm writing this I have someone else working at my place.

Since I get so much more done when co-working, I've decided to formalize this process a bit more.

Instead of "randomly calling whoever at the moment" I've started a list of people to co-work sorted by proximity to me:

    co-working-excel.jpg

This should make it easier to schedule!

    Interesting:

Did you know Google has free games and tools you can use right from the search results?

    Google this: "Play Snake"
You can instantly play a game of snake, and even select other games like Tic Tac Toe and Minesweeper.

    snake-game.gif

    There's also some useful tools...

    Google this: "Flip A Coin"
You'll be able to do quick coin flips to help you make a decision.

    flip-coin.jpg

Or Google "Google Tuner" and right from the search results you can tune your guitar!!

    Drawing:

Writing Tip: Avoid "Rambling Old Man Syndrome" when you write.

This is where you start writing, but end up rambling about semi-related stuff.

For example this shows a story zig-zagging all over the place and confusing the reader:

    rambling-old-man-story.jpg

The way you solve "Rambling Old Man Syndrome" is by answering this question before writing:

"The point of this article is..."

    For example:

The point of this article is...to show people how to write a cold email.

The point of this email is...to get them to call my phone number.

The point of this Tweet is...to show that you should avoid "Rambling Old Man Syndrome."

By knowing what your content is about FIRST, you can keep your story structure easy to read, like this:

Hope you enjoyed these little tidbits, have a happy Friday!

    "Rambling Old Man Syndrome"

A lot of writing is bad because of "Rambling Old Man Syndrome."

A lot of writing is bad because of "Rambling Old Man Syndrome."

That's when it feels like you're listening to a rambling old man who never finishes a specific story:

    It looks like this:

    rambling-old-man-story.jpg

These kinds of posts are built on bad outlines that look like this:

    • Intro
    • Point 1
      • Sub point 1.1
        • Sub sub point 1.1.1
        • Sub sub point 1.1.2
      • Sub point 1.2
        • Sub sub point 1.2.1
          • Sub sub sub point 1.2.1.1
      • Sub point 1.3
      • Sub point 1.4
    • Point 2
      • Sub point 2.1
    • Point 3
    • Point 4
      • Sub point 4.1
        • Sub sub point
          • Sub sub sub point
    • Point 5
      • Sub point 5.1
      • Sub point 5.2

That hurts to look at, right? 😬

Nested ideas look cool when taking notes, but are terrible for writing.

P.S. So before you write anything, answer this question:

P.P.S. This will make your content much simpler to read:

Optimize your LinkedIn profile with a better CTA

    image.png

If you’re a regular poster on LinkedIn, you can get a lot of people looking at your profile.

Having a big audience is great - but the real goal is to get those people to do something like:

    • Subscribe to your emails.
    • Buy a product from you.
    • Hire you.

…and that means visiting your website.

Most people add a link to their site in the About section of their LinkedIn profile.

That might work, but it’s easy to get lost on the profile page.

Instead, there’s a really easy way to add a CTA that you can’t miss.

Here’s how to turn your profile visits into website visits.

Step 1: Add a profile section.

    tIP3t_YnuKkLEQkj8Xs93yaFK1WyZaa2_BAiz3rH

    Step 2: Click “Add featured”.

    iJI2i-BdsY-09JZfkjWPjc1XZtz2a0G_rUU_dEbL

Step 3: Click the plus icon.

    yyiq0vg3Ii3n2FD__f0CPOb2kpZUMhGvXjgxkm-f

Step 4: Add your CTA link.

    IQOfAiNAUYQBVlfSSxfFbtZ4iM_QsaeY5MHsqjdo

Then, you should end up with a big section on your profile linking back to your site.

    wRnYczCJwxKgEStDaw0mWqzENNtnFvMZ8ovIX_Ue

This should help you turn more of your profile viewers into website visitors!

    The S.T.U.P.I.D. Email (Friday April 22nd, 2022)

(Swipe, Thought, Uplifting, Picture, Interesting, Drawing)

This is a fun email for Friday April 22nd, 2022. Hope you like it 🙂

This seems so stupidly old school, but the whole world used to run on these things called "pagers" or "beepers."

Circa 1997 it was common for people to carry around these big fat chunky plastic devices that would display a phone number on it:

    beeper.jpg

You would then find a landline phone to call back that number.

However people got clever and started making codes they could send using roughly 12 characters or less.

Checkout this LA Times article from 1997 showing how teenagers would use these codes to communicate:

    la-tbt-pager-gr-1997.png

It's funny to think how "high tech" this was ~20 years ago. Compare this simple one-way communication device showing 12 characters compared to a regular modern day iPhone!

    20-years-later.jpg

    Thought:

My favorite things to re-vamp in our members area is software products. The reason is you can:

    Show, Don't Tell

Basically this means you can show an image or video of the software in action and people understand it right away. No need to explain with tons of text.

Here's an example of Show, Don't Tell for a workout app:

    fitness-workout-fitness-ad-twitter-ad-.gif

Here's an example of Show, Don't Tell for a podcast editing feature on Descript:

    fixed-mistakes.gif

Here's an example of Show, Don't Tell for a "social landing page" app:

    show-dont-tell.jpg

Each of these examples conveys what the product does with very little text, as just "showing it" does most of the work.

    Uplifting:

This is a cool feature of Apple TV I rarely seen talked about:

Try watching your Apple TV using AirPods and they do this thing called "Spatial Audio."

It means even if your head turns away from the screen, it will still sound in your head like the audio is coming directly out the TV...as if you were watching with speakers.

It works amazingly well on Hulu and NetFlix (not really YouTube).

This sounds so realistic I had to triple-check my speakers were off!

    sound-spatial-audio.jpg

To test the different settings, try watching YouTube or turning off the Spatial Audio, and you'll see how different "normal" mode sounds.

    sound-spatial-audio-2.jpg

This is a cool feature if you don't want to disturb other people in the house, but still want to crank a movie loud, or if you don't have great speakers on your TV.

    Try it!

    Picture:

This is a funny sign, but super accurate and to the point! You can't help but run this horrible scenario in your head when you look at the machinery.

This is as direct as copywriting can be!

    funny-but-effective-messaging- (1).jpeg

    Interesting:

This whimsically bad homepage is still the homepage of CopywritingCourse.com:

    cc-landing-page.jpg

The reason it stays like this:
I've NEVER been able to beat the conversion rate of it....specifically this version with the stick figure guy.

This month a 1,000+ conversion test showed this page did:
    • Unique Visitors 7,619
    • Conversions 1,200 (people who entered their name and email)
    • Conversion Rate 15.75%

    Nearly a 16% conversion rate!

That means of every 100 people that see that page, 16 of them signup to receive my emails. That's pretty good for an old stick figure!

    Drawing:

10 years ago I acquired most of my knowledge through books.... Now I acquire it mostly through podcasts and YouTube and Social Media:

    now-and-then-learning.jpg

It's been fun to watch this shift happen as better forms of consumption become digital, easier and cheaper.

Next stop: VR and AR experiences! 😎

    nev-vr.jpg

In 20 years we'll look back on the era of big fat chunky facemasks for VR like we look back at the comical technology of pagers
